Normally, ideas for new television shows are given a chance to become “real” series that air on a network by producing one pilot episode, showing executives and test audiences how good (or bad) the show might be. Every so often, however, an idea or proposed project is so intriguing or entrancing to a network that the series is given an order for a full season, not just a test pilot; such is the case with Spike TV and ‘The Mist,’ based on the Stephen King story of the same name.
Well-known to movie-going audiences from the 2007 film adaptation of the same name, ‘The Mist’ first came to life in 1980 as a novella contained in the ‘Dark Forces’ horror anthology. According to reports, the folks at Spike were so impressed with the script and series pitch for the show that the elected to forgo the usual pilot-only order and green-light a 10-episode season right away.
The network has shown a propensity for this approach; earlier this year, the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced drama ‘Harvest’ was given a full-series order, but that show has now been scrapped. Spike has also recently stopped production on another straight-to-series order, the J. Michael Straczynski-co-written ‘Red Mars,’ so it’s possible that ‘The Mist’ heading directly into full-season production is a result of a void in Spike’s upcoming production schedule from these two projects.
In case you’re not familiar with the source material, the basic premise of ‘The Mist’ is sci-fi/horror in nature: after a particularly bad thunderstorm in a small town in Maine, a heavy mist envelops a small town that contains unseen horrors for the town’s residents.
