It seemed like such a foregone conclusion that reporting it now as “officially” news almost feels a little weird – which, let’s be honest, is the same vibe most of us got while watching ‘Deadpool,’ the R-rated irreverent superhero comedy that broke all sorts of box office records earlier this year.  But yes, today the powers-that-be at 20th Century Fox announced to the world that not only is ‘Deadpool 2’ really happening, the director, screenwriters, and star are all contracted to return for more Merc-with-the-mouth goodness… or would that be badness?

Tim Miller, who made his feature-length directorial debut with the first film, will return to helm the sequel, and he will be accompanied by screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who infamously revealed before the first ‘Deadpool’ hit theaters that they were already working on the story for the sequel.  And of course, ‘Deadpool’ probably couldn’t conceivably happen without Ryan Reynolds behind the red-and-black mask as cancer patient-turned-experimental mutant Wade Wilson – so it’s a good thing he’s been locked up for film #2 as well.

The release date of the film has not been set in stone by Fox, however, and information on when we’ll see ‘Deadpool 2’ was not included in the company’s release.  A quick glance at Fox’s already-announced projected movie schedule shows “untitled Fox/Marvel film” spots already on the books for October 6, 2017, January 12, 2018, and July 13, 2018.  Odds are good the new film would fall at one of those spots, but it’s hard to say which one; with the first film having performed so well with a February release date, the January 2018 slot could make sense, but October or July are usually considered “safer bets” to release films that you, y’know, really really want to do well.

Also still to be revealed is specifics on the film’s plot, scope, and chronological continuity.  The safe bet is that audiences will see a continuation of the storylines already established in the first film, but the inclusion of the time-traveling X-Force character Cable (as previously hinted at by the creative team) could mean we may be treated to a far-future story or something even zanier.  Would you like to see Deadpool and Cable spinning through time, messing with US presidents and the like?  With this team of wacky creators, we wouldn’t count anything out right now!
