Yes, the DC Comics cinematic “Shared Universe” is substantially grittier and darker in tone than its Marvel Comics counterpart – but DC seems to be drawing the line at a certain point, as both ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and the upcoming ‘Suicide Squad‘ both check into theaters with PG-13 ratings. There is a possibility, at least for some, that a follow-up film to ‘Suicide Squad’ could wander into R-rated territory.
According to an interview with ‘Suicide Squad’ director David Ayer over at MTV, the man at the helm is certainly thinking that he’d like to go in that direction. “For an R movie, you have to decide to do it right out the gate, and that was never the case here,” Ayer explains in regards to the film that’s about to hit theaters. “We were always going to hit the PG-13 rating. But the film is meant to be that. It’s got edge, and it’s got attitude. And it’s got its own voice… There’s a lot in the film that’s going to surprise people.”
Later in the interview, Ayer was asked if he would have any interest in making a sequel as an R-rated, film. He responded a bit coyly, but did say that “it would be worth lobbying for.”
DC, of course, would have to agree to this, and how well ‘Suicide Squad’ does in theaters this Summer would assuredly impact any future decisions along these lines. If the film did do well, DC may actually be less inclined to change the rating, as studios tend to stick with the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality, meaning a sequel would likely stick with a PG-13 rating to try and draw the same type of crowd. One option that many folks think is a real possibility is that of ‘Suicide Squad’ getting some type of R-rated cut on home video release, akin to what DC has already announced that they are doing with ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ when it is released on DVD, Blu-Ray, and digital video later this year.
