While Marvel definitely has its winning formula down pretty well for the “average” superhero film, it is the general consensus of most fans that where the Cinematic Universe really shines are the quirkier, riskier stories that involve the lesser-known characters – movies like ‘Ant-Man‘ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ With ‘Doctor Strange’ poised to hit theaters later this year, Marvel is once again ready to present a strange new take on the comic-book movie – and the creative team behind the film couldn’t be more excited that the comic company let them go all-out.
C. Robert Cargill, co-writer of ‘Doctor Strange,’ recently popped into ‘The Sunday Service‘ podcast for a chat, and it was on the show that he spoke at some length about the MCU and where the good Doctor will fit in. Here’s what he had to say about the recently-released teaser footage for the film:
“This teaser is, it’s the definition of a teaser. You are only getting, like, a small taste of just how crazy this movie gets. We have only just the slightest hints of magic in there. There are major characters you don’t even glimpse in that trailer; there is so much stuff going on, this thing is just nutty, the stuff they let us do, I can’t believe they let us do it. Like, just, … Kevin Feige and other producers like Stephen Broussard would be ‘How can we make it crazier?’ and I was like, ‘All right, let’s play around.’ It’s just a hell of an experience.”
Cargill certainly knows about crazy movie-making experiences; around 2010, he had been writing online as a film critic when he pitched a random idea he had for a movie to his friend Scott Derrickson. Derrickson happened to know horror-movie producer Jason Blum, and when Derrickson told him Cargill’s idea, Blum fast-tracked it into production, and ‘Sinister‘ was born. The movie was a success, and after writing the sequel, Cargill landed his ‘Doctor Strange’ gig. Next up, he’ll be penning the upcoming ‘The Outer Limits‘ film, as well as a film based on the ‘Deus Ex’ video games.
In the podcast interview, Cargill also spoke very positively in regard to his experience working with Marvel. He said, “They are constantly trying to evolve the comic book movie, rather than going, ‘This is what works, we’re doing this.’ They’re like, ‘What haven’t we done yet? Like, what crazy stuff can we do?’”
Audiences will soon find out how much “crazy stuff” they can expect out of ‘Doctor Strange’ when it opens to US audiences on November 4, 2016.
