‘Lethal Weapon’ star Danny Glover isn’t too old for video games. He has signed on for the sequel to ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’. That film came out in winter 2017, in the wake of the juggernaut ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’, but thanks to excellent buzz, went on to become Sony’s highest-grossing film ever. While the sequel doesn’t yet have a name, it will welcome back the stars of the first movie, Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan. In addition to Glover, newcomers for the second film include Danny DeVito and Awkwafina.
Jake Kasdan returns to direct, with a screenplay by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, who also worked on the script for ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’.
‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ updated the concept of the 1995 film which centered on a board game. For ‘Welcome to the Jungle’, the focus was shifted to an 8-bit video game, with Johnson and company playing the avatars in the game for a group of high school students. Johnson portrayed the hunky hero Dr. Smolder Bravestone, with Black portraying Professor Shelly Oberon. Shelly is short for Sheldon, but his player, a girl named Bethany, didn’t realize that before selecting him as her character. Hart portrayed zoologist Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, while Gillan’s Ruby Roundhouse is a lethal dance-fighter.
Glover was last seen in the film ‘The Old Man & the Gun’ with Robert Redford, and will next appear in ‘The Last Black Man in San Francisco’, set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival later this month. He served as executive producer on the documentary ‘Hale County This Morning This Evening’, which was recently nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.
Glover’s role in the ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ sequel is currently under wraps, as are those of DeVito and Awkwafina. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 13 of this year.
