It looks like with the Hulk’s success in ‘The Avengers,’ Marvel is once again thinking about giving the guy his own movie once again. After the flops that were 2003’s ‘Hulk’ and 2008’s ‘The Incredible Hulk,’ it seemed unlikely that he would be getting much screen time again on his own. Thankfully that was until they cast Mark Ruffalo in the role of Bruce Banner and just like that, everything changed. Fans everywhere have finally been given a Hulk that they can enjoy, but can they enjoy it enough for a full movie?
When asked about a stand alone movie in a recent interview, Ruffalo said that prior to the success of ‘The Avengers’ there wasn’t a snowball’s chance in hell of it happening. “It was basically ‘No!”, but “now there is some consideration for it.” Consideration, though, doesn’t mean that it is set in stone and he clarified with “But there’s still nothing definitive, not even a skeletal version of what it would be. I look forward to going down that road, if we could crack that nut. I think obviously the Banner/Hulk story line is not an easy nut to crack.”
He is one hundred and ten percent correct that the Hulk is a tough character to crack. Story events such as ‘Planet Hulk’ and ‘World War Hulk’ could make for great big budget blockbusters. If the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ is a success, the introduction to a cosmic Marvel could help pave the way for one of these to happen. They’d just need a reason to shoot Banner into space first. Of course it is always possible Bucky will have taken over the mantle of Captain America by that point and he will probably be a little more willing to make that kind of a decision.
As ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron‘ will give the Hulk a “bigger, more complex role” there is a chance we could see an interesting spin on things. In the comics, Banner has been working closely with S.H.I.E.L.D. and while the world peace keeping organization is in shambles in the Cinematic Universe at the moment, having one of the smartest men and strongest weapons in the world on their side might be just what they need to reform.
