It’s a question that has intrigued storytellers and audiences alike for generations.  The desire to take something known and twist it ever so slightly, to the point where elements and pieces are not immediately recognizable – or worse, things are chillingly recognizable and seemingly appropriate in their darker state. The thought of “yes, I could see something like this happening” is perhaps one of the scariest story premises out there – especially when what we’re being presented with is dark and dangerous. Such is the case with ‘Civil War,’ the new film from director Alex Garland and production studio A24. Taking place in the indeterminately-near future, the political and socio-economical divide in the United States of America has grown to the point where the country has fractured, with several states deciding to try their own hand at self-governance.  A few maps shown early in the film indicate that close to 20 states may be trying to secede in various ways.  Factions such as the “Florida Alliance” and the “New People’s Army” have arisen, but the two largest proponents have joined forces to create the “Western Forces,” and in a large-yet-subtle twist, it’s California and Texas, of all the […]

Chris Pratt returns as Emmet Brickowski, along with Elizabeth Banks as Lucy a.k.a. Wyldstyle, Will Arnett as Batman, and Allison Brie as Unikitty.  In addition, Pratt will voice a new character, Rex Dangervest, a freewheeling action hero that appears to to be a parody of his own other roles in ‘Jurassic World’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’.  Likewise, Brie is voicing Ultrakatty, which appears to be an unleashed version of Unikitty. ‘The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part’ also introduces new characters, but are they friends or foes?  Two newcomers are featured on the new posters, Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi voiced by Tiffany Haddish and General Mayhem, also known as Sweet Mayhem, performed by ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz. Check out the new posters below: Though they didn’t get their own posters, Charlie Day, Jonah Hill, Nick Offerman, and Channing Tatum will be back as spaceman Benny, Green […]

Everything Is Bleak In The Newest Trailer For ‘The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part’ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/11/21/everything-bleak-newest-trailer-lego-movie-2-second-part/ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/11/21/everything-bleak-newest-trailer-lego-movie-2-second-part/#disqus_thread Wed, 21 Nov 2018 15:05:23 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=307338 Once everything was awesome, but that no longer seems to be the case, as the new trailer for ‘The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part’ finds heroes Lucy a.k.a. Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) and Emmet (Chris Pratt) in a Mad Max-like desert wasteland.  It’s not clear why they’re there, but that seems secondary as viewers are immediately introduced to new baddie General Mayhem, a.k.a. Sweet Mayhem, voiced by ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine”s Stephanie Beatriz.  Fans of the building bricks and more specifically, Minifigures, may notice that Mayhem doesn’t have the average Minifigure physique, but rather that of one of the LEGO Friends. That explains why the action takes Emmet and his new ally Rex Dangervest (also voiced by Pratt, in a self-parodying role) to the “Sis Star System.”  The first ‘LEGO Movie’ involved a kid raiding his dad’s LEGO collection to craft his own elaborate adventures.  It looks as though in the sequel, the boy’s sister invades, getting her glittery mitts on Minifigures like Superman (Channing Tatum) and others. Check out the new trailer below:   As stated, Pratt pulls double duty in this sequel, as both Emmet and Rex Dangervest, a Minifigure that seems inspired by his ‘Jurassic World’ character Owen, with […]

Nick Offerman Joins The Cast Of ‘Good Omens’ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/03/07/nick-offerman-joins-cast-good-omens/ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/03/07/nick-offerman-joins-cast-good-omens/#disqus_thread Wed, 07 Mar 2018 17:21:55 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=278586 Just when you thought that the televised version of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett‘s ‘Good Omens‘ couldn’t get any better we have Nick Offerman (‘Parks and Recreation’,’The Founder’) joining the cast! Amazon is bringing us this six-part mini-series and I’ve been dying for every piece of information that the cast, crew, and studio have been willing to share with us so far. The book has a set of circumstances which play out in a fun way for fans of ‘The Omen’ and Offerman’s role will be crucial to that sequence. The actor has been cast as “the U.S. Ambassador and father to Warlock” who is a child that is mistaken to be the Antichrist by those who serve Heaven and Hell. According to Gaiman: “There may not be anyone alive who can deadpan a line quite as well as Nick Offerman. He’s a terrific performer and has to say a lot of things in Good Omens that are humanly impossible to deliver with a straight face. Fortunately, Nick is not entirely human. We are very lucky to have him.” As to Offerman, he isn’t just acting in the series but was a fan of the novel as well! It is […]
