Receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is the highlight of many entertainers’ careers, but when reporting the news that Kirsten Dunst had gotten the coveted honor, a man working for the Reuters international news agency chose to caption the tweet, “Kirsten Dunst, best known for her role as Spiderman’s girlfriend, receives a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame.”
While it’s true that one of Durst’s most iconic roles was indeed in the first cycle of ‘Spider-Man’ (with a hyphen) movies… she has a name! If the person writing had simply put “best known for playing Mary Jane Watson in the ‘Spider-Man’ movies…” they might not have set off the firestorm they did. Maybe.
Fans were quick to roast the writer, pointing out Dunst’s many honors and memorable roles, going back to when she was 12 years old and made a splash in ‘Interview with the Vampire’, and quickly followed that with ‘Little Women’ and ‘Jumanji’. She has never stopped acting since, and in 2011, she won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, for her performance in Lars von Trier’s ‘Melancholia’ (she won a Saturn Award and more for the same role). In 2015, Dunst won a Critics’ Choice Television Award for her role on the second season of ‘Fargo’, and in 2017, she won a Screen Actors Guild Award for ‘Hidden Figures’.
While fans were quick to jump to her defense on Twitter, Dunst didn’t speak about the matter until she appeared on ‘The Talk’ chatshow, where she was promoting her new series, ‘On Becoming a God in Central Florida’ and stated:
“Well you know… I don’t really look at Twitter and stuff, so I’m not really a social media girl. But I was looking for the show and everything, and it felt like, you know, I read it too and was like ‘Yeah, that’s pretty s****y.’ (Laughs) So I was proud that my fans and everyone rallied around and supported me. I was a very ignorant tweet, and it was probably done very carelessly by a man.”
Reuters has since deleted and replaced the original tweet with this new one:

Was the first tweet the most horribly offensive? No, but it was dismissive and an example of male privilege. I’m sure Dunst isn’t losing any sleep over it.
Her new series ‘On Becoming a God in Central Florida’ is now airing on Showtime.
