What if. It’s a question that has intrigued storytellers and audiences alike for generations. The desire to take something known and twist it ever so slightly, to the point where elements and pieces are not immediately recognizable – or worse, things are chillingly recognizable and seemingly appropriate in their darker state. The thought of “yes, I could see something like this happening” is perhaps one of the scariest story premises out there – especially when what we’re being presented with is dark and dangerous. Such is the case with ‘Civil War,’ the new film from director Alex Garland and production studio A24. Taking place in the indeterminately-near future, the political and socio-economical divide in the United States of America has grown to the point where the country has fractured, with several states deciding to try their own hand at self-governance. A few maps shown early in the film indicate that close to 20 states may be trying to secede in various ways. Receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is the highlight of many entertainers’ careers, but when reporting the news that Kirsten Dunst had gotten the coveted honor, a man working for the Reuters international news agency chose to caption the tweet, “Kirsten Dunst, best known for her role as Spiderman’s girlfriend, receives a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame.” While it’s true that one of Durst’s most iconic roles was indeed in the first cycle of ‘Spider-Man’ (with a hyphen) movies… she has a name! If the person writing had simply put “best known for playing Mary Jane Watson in the ‘Spider-Man’ movies…” they might not have set off the firestorm they did. Maybe. Fans were quick to roast the writer, pointing out Dunst’s many honors and memorable roles, going back to when she was 12 years old and made a splash in ‘Interview with the Vampire’, and quickly followed that with ‘Little Women’ and ‘Jumanji’. She has never stopped acting since, and in 2011, she won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, for her performance in Lars von Trier’s ‘Melancholia’ (she won a Saturn Award and more for the same role). Apparently, Kirsten Dunst is not too impressed with Sony and Marvel trying to reboot ‘Spider-Man’ again, as she seems to think they got it right the first time around, so why bother to continue making movies? Stepping down from her high horse for an interview recently with Marie Claire, Dunst shares her thoughts on the latest iteration of Spider-Man in the MCU: “We made the best ones, so who cares? I’m like, ‘You make it all you want.’…They’re just milking that cow for money. It’s so obvious. You know what I mean.” Which falls in line with other recent statements she has given about the ‘Spider-Man’ reboots, especially this one below she gave while speaking to Variety: “I don’t care. Everyone likes our Spider-Man. C’mon, am I right or what? Listen, I’d rather be in the first ones than the new ones.” So big revelation there, believe it or not, it seems studios are just out to make money (*gasp*), thank you, Kirsten Dunst, for enlightening us on that one. Watch enough movies about the space race and you’ll be convinced that Americans got off the planet and ultimately to the moon through the efforts of a lot of nerdy white guys with flat-top haircuts. It took way too long for the USA to get men and women of different ethnic and racial backgrounds into spaceships, but it turns out that behind the scenes, the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs were powered by a lot more than just those nerdy guys. Based on the book of the same name, the movie ‘Hidden Figures’ reveals the vital role that a group of black women played in the history of America’s journey into space. It focuses on three brilliant women, Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson. The space race started when the USSR launched the Sputnik satellite in 1957, the first country to successfully put anything into orbit. The film effectively begins just after that, when the nascent National Aeronautic and Space Administration was struggling with plans to put a man into space. In a time when race has become a somewhat divisive subject, along comes ‘Hidden Figures’ to show what can be achieved when you look past sexism and prejudice to work for a common goal – and what better common goal was there than getting John Glenn to orbit the Earth? Based on the true untold events during the nation’s race to space, ‘Hidden Figures’ follows the real-life story of female African-Americans Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) who provided the calculations behind the success of Project Mercury, one of the greatest space operations in history. For her work with NASA, Johnson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama in 2015. Directed by Theodore Melfi, the film not only recreates some of the difficulties these women had to endure during the 60s in a world where men dominated the science fields, but it also shows the ironies of the time with some humor. When it came time to assemble my list of most anticipated films of the year (without superheroes in them), there were a few that just narrowly didn’t make the cut. Among those movies was definitely ‘Midnight Special’, the latest film from acclaimed indie writer/director Jeff Nicols. After making major waves with his previous films ‘Take Shelter’ and ‘Mud’, the filmmaker is bringing his uniquely grounded style to a big studio genre film for the first time. That’s pretty exciting to just think about, but now you can get an idea of what that’s actually like thanks to the latest trailer for the film that reunites Nicols with Michael Shannon once again. Following the film’s premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, many viewers noted that it’s best to go into ‘Midnight Special’ as blank of a slate as possible. Luckily, the previews keep a whole lot of secrets from the audience. Love Is Stronger Than Gravity In New ‘Upside Down’ Trailer

A new trailer has been released for the film ‘Upside Down’ and it proves that love can conquer all – even gravity. The film is from Argentinian director Juan Diego Solanas, who also wrote the film, and centers on two would be lovers who come from two different worlds (literally) and must fight against their own society’s convention (and gravity) to be together. Their worlds are actually twin planets with opposite gravitational pulls. In Adam’s world (Jim Sturgess), you rise down and fall up and in Eden’s world, gravity is much like ours. But that’s not all. There’s also a class distinction between the two worlds and never the two shall meet, that is, until Adam fell in love with Eden. The premise is very conventional pulling from Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ but what makes this film unique is the visual effects. While watching the film upside down while one character is visiting the other may be disorienting, the effect is successful in its supplementation to the storytelling. French Trailer For Sci-Fi Movie ‘Upside Down’

The first trailer for Juan Solanas’ new sci-fi romance ‘Upside Down’ has been released and it already has me sold! The story follows Adam and his search for a love he met when he was a child. Only problem is that Eve (yes, the names are a little trite) lives in an opposite world from his. While one lives in an up world, the other lives in the down and as a voice in the trailer says “We don’t go down to their world, we certainly don’t want them coming up to ours.” The story is obviously based on the often used plot of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ but with a sci-fi twist. The visual effects of each world seen in the trailer, however, does help bring the movie together quite well giving this love story a new feel. The movie stars Jim Sturgess (‘One Day’, ‘21’) as Adam and Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane in the ‘Spiderman’ movies) as Eve. At the moment, the movie doesn’t have a US distributor so unless someone decides to pick it up, we may not see it here in theaters. You can take a look at the trailer after the jump.
