One of the more exciting aspects about the most recent release of trailers from the MCU has been the resurgence of Samuel L Jackson’s character of SHIELD spymaster Nick Fury, who first re-appeared at the end of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ right before being wiped from existence, but who we know from trailers will be a major character in ‘Captain Marvel’ (showing his origins in SHIELD) and a big character in ‘Spider-Man: Far from Home‘ where he looks to become Spidey’s new mentor/father figure (which does not bode well for the chances of Iron-Man surviving ‘Avengers: End Game,” as he was Spidey’s first mentor in ‘Homecoming’ and has long been rumored to perish in ‘Avengers: End Game’). Still, part of why fans are so happy to see Nick Fury return was that he inexplicably disappeared for so long, missing out on some major MCU moments that fans were sure he would appear in.
While speaking recently to ‘Happy Sad Confused‘ about his character’s recent usage (or lack thereof) in the MCU, Jackson stated the following:
“Has [Fury] been used wisely? Yeah, except for things like Civil War. If all the Avengers are f**king fighting each other, where’s their guardian? Where’s that dude who comes in and goes ‘Alright, everybody go to your rooms. I’ll be in there to talk to you in a minute’?…Either he’s the guy who brought them together and he’s the glue, or he’s not. So, I felt a way about that.”
Personally, I like the idea that Fury was not in ‘Civil War’ because his absence is part of what allowed things to get to the point that it did. To clarify, if Fury had been there to calm people down and keep them in check, there might not have been a “civil war” and that would have been a boring movie. And had he been there and not been able to keep the Avengers under control, that might have made his character lose some esteem or power in the eyes of many fans. So yeah, I’m ok with him being absent, especially if there’s a back-story where he was fighting Skrulls or Hydra or something in Europe, which would clearly be more important at that point in time.
What are your thoughts on Fury’s absence and now triumphant return to the MCU? Did you miss him? Do you think we’ll be seeing even more of him, and potentially SHIELD, in the future? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
