What if. It’s a question that has intrigued storytellers and audiences alike for generations. The desire to take something known and twist it ever so slightly, to the point where elements and pieces are not immediately recognizable – or worse, things are chillingly recognizable and seemingly appropriate in their darker state. The thought of “yes, I could see something like this happening” is perhaps one of the scariest story premises out there – especially when what we’re being presented with is dark and dangerous. Such is the case with ‘Civil War,’ the new film from director Alex Garland and production studio A24. Taking place in the indeterminately-near future, the political and socio-economical divide in the United States of America has grown to the point where the country has fractured, with several states deciding to try their own hand at self-governance. A few maps shown early in the film indicate that close to 20 states may be trying to secede in various ways. Factions such as the “Florida Alliance” and the “New People’s Army” have arisen, but the two largest proponents have joined forces to create the “Western Forces,” and in a large-yet-subtle twist, it’s California and Texas, of all the […]

Countdown To Endgame: Top Emotional Moments In The MCU

In a universe as fleshed out and tangible as the MCU, it’s easy to get lost in the spectacle of larger-than-life comic book heroes and villain battling onscreen. The action and choreography mixed with fantastical power sets and (mostly) excellent CGI is a dream come true for many there to enjoy the visual representations of these characters. And while the visual spectacles are something to behold, they are not what captivates so many people across the world. It’s the downbeats, those moments of emotion where we get the depth behind these characters that truly give us lasting memories. As we head towards Endgame, a film that is the emotional capstone of the MCU thus far, what better way to prepare than to gather to most emotionally impactful moments in the MCU. Road To Endgame: Best Action Scenes In The MCU

Action: it’s the one thing that, even if a movie or its characters are uninteresting, can make a forgettable film an entertaining spectacle. Thankfully, for the majority of the MCU’s run, this universe has been able to do is provide that outstanding mix of good stories, great characters, and compelling action. What the MCU has done so well with its movies is to craft action sequences that matter beyond the fun of the kinetic thrills. And with 21 movies under the MCU umbrella, there are those that stand apart from the pack. For me, the scenes listed below are some of the most definitive facets of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the type of action scenes I’ll never get tired of watching. The Expressway fight, Captain America: The Winter Soldier: Encompassing every type of action one could ask for–car crashes, explosions, guns, and some great fight choreography—this scene finishes off the second act of The Winter Soldier. We’re less than weeks away from Avengers: Endgame’s official release and what better way to pass the time than talking about the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole? For 10 years now, the MCU has brought some of the best moments in not just comic book movie history, but big screen entertainment. More specifically, there is a plethora of moments I’d call iconic. RELATED: Kevin Feige On The “Conclusion” Of A “Saga” In ‘Avengers: Endgame’ ‘Iconic’ can mean so many different things but, for me, it encompasses moments that creates its own emotional resonance that goes beyond dramatic heartache. It may be a line of dialogue, a single shot, or an entire action set piece; often these are taken from the pages of the comics that birthed these characters, but other times, they are creations of the wonderfully talented men and women responsible for bringing these larger-than-life characters to the big screen. Missing SHIELD: Samuel L. Jackon Weighs In On Nick Fury’s Absence During ‘Captain America: Civil War’

One of the more exciting aspects about the most recent release of trailers from the MCU has been the resurgence of Samuel L Jackson’s character of SHIELD spymaster Nick Fury, who first re-appeared at the end of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ right before being wiped from existence, but who we know from trailers will be a major character in ‘Captain Marvel’ (showing his origins in SHIELD) and a big character in ‘Spider-Man: Far from Home‘ where he looks to become Spidey’s new mentor/father figure (which does not bode well for the chances of Iron-Man surviving ‘Avengers: End Game,” as he was Spidey’s first mentor in ‘Homecoming’ and has long been rumored to perish in ‘Avengers: End Game’). Still, part of why fans are so happy to see Nick Fury return was that he inexplicably disappeared for so long, missing out on some major MCU moments that fans were sure he would appear in. Book Review: ‘Civil War’ By Stuart Moore

I think we can all agree that the ‘Civil War’ storyline wasn’t well received by the comic community on the whole, but big sales pushed it into guiding both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a novel by Stuart Moore. The idea of taking the entire ‘Civil War’ story arc with all of the characters involved and streamlining it into a single novel is a daunting task to contemplate and even under Moore’s guiding hand, it felt like it wasn’t going to work. However, it did. In fact, I believe I enjoyed the prose version of this tale more than the comics which it is working to adapt. Now, there wasn’t anything new to the characters or their motivations, and while a few changes were made due to space, none of them felt out of place or took away from the story. Just like the comics, we follow the government introducing the Superhero Registration Act which pits Captain America against Iron Man as to the moral vs. legal aspects of how it plays out. The tensions between the two sides escalate until superheroes are fighting one another over the right to privacy instead of working together to take down the supervillains […]

Toy Fair 2018: Marvel Legends Celebrates 10 Years Of The MCU

This year Marvel fans everywhere are celebrating the momentous 10th anniversary of the Marvel Cinematic Universe! The franchise started off way back in 2008 with the first ‘Iron Man’ film, and carried on immediately with the (criminally underrated) ‘Incredible Hulk’ later that year! Since then we’ve gotten two more ‘Iron Man’ films, trilogies for both ‘Thor’ and ‘Captain America’, two ‘Guardians of The Galaxy’ movies, and even films for somewhat minor characters like ‘Ant-man‘ and ‘Doctor Strange‘! Even as I’m writing this ‘Black Panther‘, the latest film in the MCU, is celebrating what looks to be a record-breaking opening weekend of release in theaters! And of course, how could we not mention ‘The Avengers’, which has had two monumentally successful films with a third due out later this year to tie everything together for a ‘finale’ of sorts and culminate a decade’s worth of buildup! Mark Millar Wasn’t A Big Fan Of ‘Batman Vs. Superman’, ‘Suicide Squad’, Or ‘Captain America: Civil War’

Mark Millar isn’t just the creator of ‘Kick-Ass’ but was largely responsible for Marvel’s “Civil War” story arc and weighs in on many of the comic book films from 2016, needless to say, he wasn’t a fan of most of them. While ‘Captain America: Civil War‘ has been met with mixed reviews, overall critics and fans have enjoyed the film though Mark Millar clearly wasn’t one of these fans. ‘Civil War’ ended up in the portion of his Top 10 Movies of the year titled “Didn’t Really Dig” and explains why: Civil War had a good opening twenty mins, but then I honestly can’t remember what the movie was about. It’s interesting the Russos have a background in comedy because it’s really missing in these otherwise well-made pictures and very, very missed. I really hope this bleakness doesn’t extend into their two Avengers pictures because what made that first Avengers work was the light as well as shade and I’ll be sad if that’s all lost like it was in this picture. That being said, Millar wasn’t down on all Marvel Studios as ‘Doctor Strange‘ took the final spot in his Top 10 picks: Just a nice, fun Marvel movie. […]

No Plans For X-Men/Avengers Crossover, Says Kevin Feige

When it was announced that Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox had begun to play nice (nice enough to get ‘Legion’ made, at any rate), comics fans the world over couldn’t help but get excited. And this wasn’t just for the ‘Legion’ series itself, as promising as it looks. No, the real excitement was at the prospect of further cooperation between the two studios, especially given their notoriously strained relationship they’ve had for some time now. In particular, the news brought to mind echoes of the earlier announcement that Sony would partner with Marvel Studios on future Spider-Man films, thus allowing the web slinger to take his rightful place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hopes understandably ran high that the X-Men might soon do the same. Especially after the release of this summer’s ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’, rumors began to circulate that the Children of the Atom would be coming to the MCU, either as part of a crossover or through a full-blown MCU reboot.
