While a flop at the box office, the 2012 release of ‘Dredd’ has a cult following and most who view the movie has offered praise to it. The film itself lists Pete Travis as the director though now we seem to have confirmation that Alex Garland was responsible for most of the movie. The details have come directly from Karl Urban himself, and if anyone knows who directed him while filming shots, you would think it would be the star of the film.
According to Urban:
“I would love to have the opportunity to play Dredd again, but if it doesn’t happen, then I’m happy with the fact that we’ve made a film that has become a cult classic and that people have discovered over time. A huge part of the success of Dredd is in fact due to Alex Garland and what a lot of people don’t realize is that Alex Garland actually directed that movie.”
This is something that has been talked about for quite some time so isn’t exactly news, but there have long been rumors that Garland did more for the movie than Travis did. In fact, it was also rumored that the credited director wasn’t allowed to work on the editing process due to disagreements with both the film’s producers and executives.
At one point, Garland attempted to receive a co-director credit before backing off and the pair issued a joint statement that they had “an unorthodox collaboration” before production began to explain this away.
While ‘Dredd 2‘ likely won’t happen after all this time and due to the upcoming television series, the actor would jump at the chance to make it happen:
“That would rock my world. I just hope when people think of Alex Garland’s filmography that Dredd is the first film that he made before Ex Machina. You think about it in those terms; it goes Dredd, Ex Machina, Annihilation.”
I’d love to see this pair make another movie, ‘Dredd 2’ or not. Still, it is exciting that more credit is being given to the director and for such a fantastic film as well.
