After making a splash at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, ‘The Witch’ made it onto our most anticipated films of 2016. The movie written and directed by newcomer Robert Eggers tells a foreboding tale of witchcraft in the New England wilderness decades before the well-documented Salem witch trials. But the most unsettling thing about it is that Eggers took dialogue directly from various historical sources. Now, in anticipation for the wide release later this month, a new clip has hit the web as a tease for the upcoming horror production.
Over the weekend, A24 shared a brief video as a preview for ‘The Witch’. Though it may be short and sweet, it features some sinister scenes that scream that something bad is about to happen. From the singing kids to the ominous black goat, the whole thing just doesn’t sit well. You can check it out below followed by the official synopsis of the film:
New England, 1630. Upon threat of banishment by the church, an English farmer leaves his colonial plantation, relocating his wife and five children to a remote plot of land on the edge of an ominous forest — within which lurks an unknown evil. Strange and unsettling things begin to happen almost immediately — animals turn malevolent, crops fail, and one child disappears as another becomes seemingly possessed by an evil spirit. With suspicion and paranoia mounting, family members accuse teenage daughter Thomasin of witchcraft, charges she adamantly denies. As circumstances grow more treacherous, each family member’s faith, loyalty and love become tested in shocking and unforgettable ways.
