It’s a question that has intrigued storytellers and audiences alike for generations.  The desire to take something known and twist it ever so slightly, to the point where elements and pieces are not immediately recognizable – or worse, things are chillingly recognizable and seemingly appropriate in their darker state. The thought of “yes, I could see something like this happening” is perhaps one of the scariest story premises out there – especially when what we’re being presented with is dark and dangerous. Such is the case with ‘Civil War,’ the new film from director Alex Garland and production studio A24. Taking place in the indeterminately-near future, the political and socio-economical divide in the United States of America has grown to the point where the country has fractured, with several states deciding to try their own hand at self-governance.  A few maps shown early in the film indicate that close to 20 states may be trying to secede in various ways.  Factions such as the “Florida Alliance” and the “New People’s Army” have arisen, but the two largest proponents have joined forces to create the “Western Forces,” and in a large-yet-subtle twist, it’s California and Texas, of all the […]

Ursula K. Le Guin’s “Earthsea” Novels Are Being Developed Into An Ongoing Television Series https://sciencefiction.com/2019/09/04/ursula-k-le-guins-earthsea-novels-are-being-developed-into-an-ongoing-television-series/ https://sciencefiction.com/2019/09/04/ursula-k-le-guins-earthsea-novels-are-being-developed-into-an-ongoing-television-series/#disqus_thread Wed, 04 Sep 2019 18:18:26 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=335835 Ursula K. Le Guin’s epic “Earthsea Cycle” novels are set to go into production for the small screen. If the name sounds familiar for TV watchers, there was a miniseries released on Syfy back in 2004 when it was still the Sci-Fi channel that Le Guin had co-written. Readers though are sure to recognize the title as this five novel and eight short story series was initially created in 1968 with the release of ‘A Wizard of Earthsea’ and was completed in 2018 when the short story ‘Firelight’ was released in ‘The Paris Review’ which is sadly the year that Le Guin passed away. This new television show is being created in a combined effort from both A24 and Oscar-nominated producer Jennifer Fox (‘Nightcrawler,’ ‘Michael Clayton’). Fox will be producing the series with A24 financing the project. They haven’t started to shop around for a network at this time but will be doing so soon. Before Le Guin’s death, this had initially be set for a multi-film project but has since been decided that an ongoing series would work better. I’m sure the success of ‘Game of Thrones‘ and the constant greenlighting of other fantasy series such as ‘Lord of […]

Robert Pattinson’s ‘High Life’ Has Nabbed US Distribution https://sciencefiction.com/2018/09/14/robert-pattinsons-high-life-nabbed-us-distribution/ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/09/14/robert-pattinsons-high-life-nabbed-us-distribution/#disqus_thread Fri, 14 Sep 2018 23:45:41 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=298361 On the twilight hour of being released, ‘High Life’ has gotten North American distribution by A24. The sci-fi drama which was directed by Claire Denis (’35 Shots of Rum’) who also co-wrote the film with Jean-Pol Fargeau and Geoff Cox recently premiered at the Toronto Film Festival to positive reviews. It will be the first English-language movie which Denis has released. ‘High Life’ stars Robert Pattinson (‘Twilight’,’The Lost City of Z’), Juliette Binoche (‘Ghost in the Shell’,’Godzilla’), Mia Goth (‘A Cure for Wellness’,’Suspiria’), and André Benjamin (‘American Crime’,’Four Brothers’). While there is some talent here, you might not find a ton of likable characters as the movie takes place on a spaceship which is traveling and has a group of criminals on board. Each of them is there under false pretenses and believe that they’re being freed if they take part in a mission that will take them to a black hole that will allow them to locate an alternate energy source. However, they’re also being used for sexual experiments by the scientists on board. In ‘High Life,’ Pattinson’s character will be taking care of his baby daughter while on the ship. A review of the movie has described it […]

Latest Clip From ‘The Witch’ Teases Something Wicked https://sciencefiction.com/2016/02/09/latest-clip-from-the-witch-teases-something-wicked/ https://sciencefiction.com/2016/02/09/latest-clip-from-the-witch-teases-something-wicked/#disqus_thread Wed, 10 Feb 2016 00:00:21 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=208915 After making a splash at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, ‘The Witch’ made it onto our most anticipated films of 2016. The movie written and directed by newcomer Robert Eggers tells a foreboding tale of witchcraft in the New England wilderness decades before the well-documented Salem witch trials. But the most unsettling thing about it is that Eggers took dialogue directly from various historical sources. Now, in anticipation for the wide release later this month, a new clip has hit the web as a tease for the upcoming horror production. Over the weekend, A24 shared a brief video as a preview for ‘The Witch’. Though it may be short and sweet, it features some sinister scenes that scream that something bad is about to happen. From the singing kids to the ominous black goat, the whole thing just doesn’t sit well. You can check it out below followed by the official synopsis of the film: New England, 1630. Upon threat of banishment by the church, an English farmer leaves his colonial plantation, relocating his wife and five children to a remote plot of land on the edge of an ominous forest — within which lurks an unknown evil. Strange and […]

‘Under The Skin’ Finally Gets A U.S. Release Date To Get Under Your Skin https://sciencefiction.com/2014/01/06/skin-finally-gets-us-release-date-get-skin/ https://sciencefiction.com/2014/01/06/skin-finally-gets-us-release-date-get-skin/#disqus_thread Mon, 06 Jan 2014 14:00:15 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=135482 After a teaser and a trailer for ‘Under The Skin’, it honestly felt like we’d never hear of an actual release date for Scarlett Johansson’s (The Avengers‘, ‘Her‘) latest film. Finally, though, we’ve found out that the indie distribution company A24 has the distribution rights and will release the film in the U.S. on April 4th, 2014! Wait, April 4th? Why does that sound familiar? Oh, that’s right, it’s the same date another one of her films is being releases that you may have heard of – ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘. While I’m pretty sure we all know which of Johansson’s films are going to perform better at the box office, anyone who has been following this film will probably still try to catch a showing of it, even if not on opening day. It looks to be one of the stranger science fiction films to be released in 2014 (if not all of the decade!) and let’s be honest, many of the men who see Johansson in her Black Widow costume are going to want to see her using her sexual appeal to get men to do what she wants. Of course, the fact that she’s an alien […]
