For a long time now, Dan Aykroyd has been trying to get ‘Ghostbusters 3’ off the ground. After generating interest from the original crew, including Harold Ramis and director Ivan Reitman, the studio, and fans all around the world, it seems like the sequel has hit a huge roadblock in the form of Bill Murray. I love you, Bill, but you’re slowly killing me.
In an interview with the Telegraph, Aykroyd said that he “honestly [doesn’t] know” if the film will ever happen. He said that the film is currently in “suspended animation”. Even though Reitman, Ramis, and Columbia would love to do it without Murray, Aykroyd doesn’t want to do it if they can’t get the whole band back together for the project.
Even though we may be furious at Bill Murray, who at one point teased us and showed up at an award show dressed as Peter Venkman, Dan Aykroyd defends his friend’s choice and remains understanding.
“Bill Murray will not do the movie. He doesn’t want to be involved. He’s got six kids, houses all over America. He golfs in these tournaments where they pay him to turn up and have a laugh. He’s into this life and living it. I know we’d have a lot of fun [but] I can’t be mad at him. He’s a friend first, a colleague second. We have a deep personal relationship that transcends business and he doesn’t want to know.”
Aykroyd goes on to say that he doesn’t want to do the movie either if it exploits the franchise, despite what the studio wants, which would probably involve recasting the Venkman character or killing him off or bringing him back as a CGI ghost. Considering that Aykroyd is looking to recapture the magic of the original films, it is highly unlikely that he’d let that happen at all, so we should be thankful for that at least. It’s definitely still a huge bummer though that we won’t be seeing the Ghostbusters back on the big screen one last time.
If I had to guess, ‘Ghostbusters 3’ will never get made with the original cast. What is more realistic is a complete movie series reboot, possibly with cameo appearances from the original cast.
