We’ve seen mutants at odds with one another since the 2000 release of ‘X-Men’ and ‘Dark Phoenix’ is going to give us that concept once more and this one throwing the X-Men at one another. In the 12th and final installment to the ‘X-Men’ franchise under Fox’s guiding hand, we’ll see a hopeful correction to the 2006 ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ which failed to give us a proper adaptation of “The Dark Phoenix Saga.” Of course, without a proper build up of the characters after the timeline was rebooted it almost feels destined to fall short of comic book fan expectations.
At any rate, it seems hard to say it’ll be worse than “The Last Stand” so the movie will at least have that going for it.

As to the X-Men being at each other’s throats, according to Sheridan,
“…[W]hat happens with Jean Grey in the movie, it kind of splits the X-Men up into two groups. There’s one group who feels like they can still save Jean and she’s not lost; that the same Jean Grey that they’ve always known is still there. And then some of them think that she’s way too dangerous. And so it kind of causes this conflict that starts to take form in the middle of the movie. And I just think it lends itself to allowing the movie to have much more tension between those characters. And I think that’s something that we’ve seen in X-Men movies, but I think this movie is probably much more grounded and real and raw because of that.”
As the previews have shown, it looks like Jean will end up killing Mystique and this will be what sets the X-Men at odds with one another.
