Channing Tatum is starring in a new science fiction thriller called ‘The Forever War’ that’s in the works and Warner Brothers has won a vicious bidding battle to have the rights to it! After a competitive round of negotiations, they were able to edge out Sony Pictures and take on what could be a lucrative science fiction franchise. Jon Spaihts (‘Doctor Strange,”Prometheus’) is tackling the script which is based on the book by the same name by Joe Haldeman.
The movie has been in limbo for years as Richard Edlund has owned the film rights for 27 years and for the past 7 has tried working with Ridley Scott and Fox to get it on the big screen, but even after multiple scripts nothing has ever come from it. Now, we’ll have a fresh start with a new studio and an actor who is becoming surprisingly prolific in the science fiction film genre having been in ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,’ ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘, ‘This is the End’, ‘Jupiter Ascending‘ and is tapped to star in ‘Gambit‘ as well as a possible ‘Ghostbusters‘ movie!.
The novel has won numerous awards over the years and has often been cited as one of the best science fiction stories of all time. It doesn’t hurt the franchise possibilities having two sequels as well as a graphic novel based off of it already out there. While initially an analogy to the Vietnam War, the true focus is on soldiers that are fighting an endless battle with no idea on why they are even involved.
Personally I love a good novel adaptation. Specifically one that hasn’t been done before one or more times.
