In what is arguably one of the most highly anticipated (non-franchise) science-fiction movies of the year, Ridley Scott has potentially reclaimed his status as an acclaimed sci-fi director with ‘The Martian,’ which has huge buzz and great hype behind it even though it has yet to hit theaters. Based off a fantastic novel by Andy Weir and starring Matt Damon, the movie has all the ingredients to be a box-office success, which is definitely needed right now in the lull time after the summer blockbusters.
For those not in the know, the movie is the tale of an astronaut left behind on Mars when his crew is forced to evacuate, believing him to be dead. Damon’s character, Mark Watney, must find a way to survive on the planet on his own, fashioning ways of growing food and other survival skills all while trying to signal his crew that he is not actually dead.
Below is a new clip released for the movie, which details the events that lead up to Matt Damon’s character being stranded on Mars, introducing us to his original crew and the circumstances explaining why they left him behind. It opens with the crew of the Ares 3 learning of a massive storm heading toward them, forcing them to abandon their station, despite Damon’s character saying they should wait it out. They head out onto the surface of the planet to abandon ship, where massive winds immediately assault them, with one particularly strong gust hurling debris at Damon’s character, and knocking him away from the group.
If the rest of the movie is anywhere near as exciting and tense as this scene, this is sure to be crowd-pleaser. Plus, I think the production and costume design look particularly great, with Damon’s space-suit looking especially detailed and heroic. What are your thoughts on the clip? Directed by Ridley Scott, ‘The Martian’ stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Donald Glover and will be in theaters on October 2.
