HBO’s ‘Lovecraft Country‘ has just added some major talent as Michael Kenneth Williams (‘Assassin’s Creed’,’Boardwalk Empire’) has joined the cast! Williams made a massive impact with his work on ‘The Wire’ as Omar Little, so it is exciting to see him return to a new series on HBO. Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams are producing the series for showrunner Misha Green. The show will be based on the 2016 novel which shares the same name and was written by Matt Ruff.
On the series, he’ll be joining the previously announced Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Jonathan Majors, Wunmi Mosaku, Courtney B. Vance, Aunjanue Ellis, Jamie Harris, and Elizabeth Debicki.
The show will follow Majors playing Atticus Freeman who joins Smollett-Bell as Letitia and his uncle George played by Vance who are all planning a road trip together. This road trip isn’t for fun though as the story is set in the 1950s in Jim Crow America. To search for his missing father, they need to deal with a completely racist white America, which would be bad enough but there are also Lovecraftian monsters across the land which have to be dealt with as well.
Williams is slated to play the missing father and is described as: “Hard headed and secretive, he’s always believed you can’t live in a fantasy world, which is why he despises his son’s pulp novels. Most of the books on his shelf are nonfiction, history and political theory. The guys at the local bar call him a communist, but today we’d just call him conscious.”
Williams is a fan-favorite actor, and while he hasn’t done much genre work to date, his inclusion in this series will likely make for perfect casting for audiences as his work is always astounding. He did film scenes for ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ though with the reshoots his character had to be re-cast in the film.
