To paraphrase Elvis, there’s a “whole lotta shakin’ going on” in Hollywood as several high profile projects are seeing their release dates shuffled.
The first is rather obvious, ‘The Six Billion Dollar Man’ starring Mark Wahlberg in a big screen reboot of the classic 1970s TV action series. Director Damián Szifrón (‘Hermanos y Detectives’) was recently fired from this project, thanks to creative differences and a language barrier. ‘The Six Billion Dollar Man’ was originally slated for release on May 31, 2019, but has been pushed back to June 5, 2020. Rumor has it, Wahlberg’s ‘Daddy’s Home 2’ costar Mel Gibson will act in this movie and is now being courted to direct.
Star Wahlberg is currently filming the movie ‘Instant Family’ which is directed by Sean Anders and costars Rose Byrne and Octavia Spencer.
Warner Brothers’ ‘Doctor Sleep’ is a sequel to ‘The Shining’. Like ‘The Shining’, ‘Doctor Sleep’ is based on a Stephen King novel, albeit one of his lesser known works. This film will focus on a grown up Danny Torrance, the little boy with psychic powers that was at the center of ‘The Shining’. As an adult, Danny has turned to alcohol in an effort to erase the memories from what happened to him in the first movie. There are also apparently psychic vampires.
Mike Flanagan (‘Gerald’s Game’, ‘Ouija: Origin of Evil’) is slated to directed this picture, which now has a release date, January 24, 2020.
The next chapter of Warner Brothers’ “MonsterVerse,” ‘Godzilla: King of Monsters’ has been pushed back from its original March 22, 2019, release date to May 31, 2019, closer to the “summer” movie season. This movie will pit Godzilla against Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. Michael Dougherty is directing this sequel, which stars ‘Stranger Things” Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Charles Dance, Vera Farmiga, Sally Hawkins, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Ken Watanabe, Bradley Whitford and Ziyi Zhang.
While the other movies have been pushed back, the adaptation of ‘Pet Sematary’ has been bumped up, slightly. It was originally slated to be released on April 19, 2019, but has been moved to April 5. This reboot will be co-directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer (‘Scream: The TV Series’). Jason Clarke and John Lithgow are both signedon to star. King himself wrote the screenplay for the 1989 film adaptation, but he doesn’t seem to be affiliated with the new version.
Mark your calendars! Which movies are you most excited to see?
