Well, you know what they say about the best-laid plans. Although in the case of ‘Uncharted’, I don’t think Sony has the best anything. Tom Holland is starring in this movie, which has been in development since 2008, has again been delayed. Travis Knight (‘Bumblebee’) became the sixth director to quit the project in December. It was recently revealed that Sony hoped to woo ‘Zombieland: Double Tap’s Ruben Fleischer to take his place, but it appears that this did not succeed, as the studio has now postponed the release of this film once again.
It was scheduled to open on December 18 of this year but has now been pushed to March 5, 2021. It takes the place of another beleaguered Sony picture, ‘Masters of the Universe’, which has been taken off the schedule entirely. In this new date, ‘Uncharted’ will face-off with Paramount’s ‘Jackass 4’.
This has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter’s Aaron Couch:
Sony has moved #Uncharted back 3 months. It now opens 3/5/2021. Masters of the Universe has been taken off the calendar (it previously occupied Uncharted’s new date)

Holland was announced as the film’s star in 2017. He will play Nathan Drake, the lead character in the video game series from Naughty Dog and Sony Interactive Entertainment for Playstation. Mark Wahlberg is among those who had previously been attached to play Drake. That was around 2010 when David O. Russell (‘American Hustle’) was slated to helm. Wahlberg is now set to portray Drake’s mentor, Victor “Sully” Sullivan.

Russell was the first director lined up for ‘Uncharted’, but after his departure, Neil Burger, Seth Gordon, Shawn Levy, and Dan Trachtenberg have all come and gone.
Holland is now filming ‘Cherry’, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. He is expected to begin filming his third solo ‘Spider-Man’ movie this summer. Sony had hoped to squeeze ‘Uncharted’ in between. That may still be the plan, as March isn’t that far off, and it will need plenty of time for post-production.
The latest screenplay looks to be a revision by Rafe Judkins of a script originally penned by Joe Carnahan.
Are you still looking forward to an ‘Uncharted’ movie? If so, it might be out on March 5, 2021.
