It’s been about a month since ‘The Witcher’ premiered on Netflix, but fans– and the show’s creator– are still talking about it. It probably doesn’t help that ‘The Witcher’ is just the latest streaming series to consist of just eight episodes in its first season. But there is some stuff that viewers didn’t get to see, and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has revealed them, and perhaps unwittingly, gave a bit of insight into what fans can expect from Season 2.
If you are a fan of Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), you will want to pay attention!
Speaking to Pure Fandom, Hissrich disclosed:
“We had a lovely scene in Episode 103 [“Betrayer Moon”] where Yennefer, Fringilla, and Sabrina all discussed how they felt about their transformations, and looking back, I wish we could have kept it. It was such a gorgeous example of female friendship, and it also would have served to ground Fringilla a bit more before she joined Nilfgaard.”
Hissrich also wound up cutting a scene which would have shown young Yennefer and Triss (Anna Shaffer) meeting years before their adult selves encountered one another.
“We also filmed a scene of Yen meeting a very young Triss, who’d just arrived at Aretuza; it served to show how far Yennefer had come in her years at Aretuza, and created a sense of mentorship between these two sorceresses. Looking ahead at some stories unfolding in Season 2, I wish we still had those scenes! But I’m proud of what we accomplished.”
It’s a little odd that Hissrich had to cut anything. This is Netflix, not network television. There is no hard rule about how long episodes have to be, and many streaming shows play fast and loose with that, making some episodes longer and others shorter, depending on what the episodes demand.
But at this point, fans’ best hope of seeing these deleted scenes will be whenever ‘The Witcher’ S1 arrives on home video, which will likely be shortly before S2 arrives to stream.
Are you a fan of ‘The Witcher’ and Yennefer in particular? What do you think of these deleted scenes?
