SPOILER ALERT: This article contains information which may be SPOILERS for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Proceed with caution!
Increasingly it seems that Academy Award-winner Cate Blanchett will be playing the villainous role of Hela, Goddess of Death in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’. But now it seems that perhaps her role in the late larger Marvel Cinematic Universe may be even bigger than this one movie. Perhaps Hela isn’t just the embodiment of Death for Asgardians, but rather the universe as a whole. And her role may spill over to ‘Avengers: Infinity War – Part One’.
As we know, Thanos has been set up in three films so far as the biggest threat to the Marvel Universe. Like in the comics, Thanos is seeking all of the Infinity Stones in order to complete the Infinity Gauntlet, which will give him ultimate power. And his motivation may have been hinted at in his first film appearance, in the post-credits stinger in ‘The Avengers’ when his lackey commented that to continue to battle the heroes of Earth would be to “court death.” At this point, the shadowy villain turned to the camera and gave a knowing smirk.
Fans of the comics, of course, knew this was a reference to the Mad Titan’s obsession with Death, which in the comics is depicted as essentially a female version of the Grim Reaper, although she can take on a more human appearance at will. Thanos used the fully powered-up Infinity Gauntlet to wipe out half of the living beings in the universe in an effort to impress her.
In the movies, things may change. Rumor has it, Hela will pull double duty as a Thor villain and the object of Thanos’ obsession. The thinking is that introducing Hela in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ will make things clearer once Thanos takes center stage in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.
What do you think? Does it make sense to merge these two embodiments of Death in the movies? Or are you upset that they won’t be separate entities like they are in the comics?
Cate Blanchett is (tentatively) slated to debut as Hela in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ directed by Taika Waititi and also starring Chris Hemsworth, Mark Rufalo, Tom Hiddleston and Jaimie Alexander. The film arrives on November 3, 2017.
‘Avengers: Infinity War – Part I’ directed by Joe and Anthony Russo will arrive on May 4, 2018. ‘Avengers: Infinity War – Part II’, also directed by the Russos, will be released on May 3, 2019.
