Simms told The Hollywood Reporter: “I think the main drive to the second season [began] at the end of the first season. We painted ourselves into a corner with the revelation that Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) was a vampire slayer. When we did that, we were like, “Yeah, we’ll figure out the rest later.” A lot of season two was making sure we followed through with that story. And then it became a really fun story that turned Harvey Guillén into an action hero. It’s always a combination of wanting to do big and exciting visual comedy, things that you wouldn’t ordinarily see on a half-hour, and then balance that with my favorite parts of the show, which is when it’s just the five characters sitting around […]

The Cast Of ‘The Boys’ Urge You To “Wear A F***ing Mask!” https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/07/the-cast-of-the-boys-urge-you-to-wear-a-fing-mask/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/07/the-cast-of-the-boys-urge-you-to-wear-a-fing-mask/#disqus_thread Fri, 07 Aug 2020 11:00:05 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354879 It seems a truce has been called between The Boys and The Seven… or at least the actors that play them.  From quarantine, they have teamed-up– Karl Urban (Billy Butcher), Jack Quaid (Hughie Campbell), Laz Alonso (Mother’s Milk), Aya Cash (Stormfront), Karen Fukuhara (Kimiko), Tomer Kapon (Frenchie), Erin Moriarty (Starlight), Antony Starr (Homelander), and Jessie T. Usher (A-Train)– to record a message urging viewers to “Wear a f***ing mask,” so that, as Urban says, “you will help stop the transmission of this nasty f***ing disease.” As Quaid stated: “You want a ‘Boys’ Season 3?  They’re not gonna let us shoot unless we get the numbers down.  So please…” Karen Fukuhara also has a special message for all those other Karens out there. Check out the PSA courtesy of Collider‘s Twitter account: An important message from @TheBoysTV#WearAMask pic.twitter.com/LljaQVkcUa — Collider (@Collider) August 6, 2020 Considering that pretty much everything about ‘The Boys’ is pretty profane, it makes sense that a PSA would be too. Technically, Amazon has already renewed ‘The Boys’ for a third season, but there was already a gap of over a year between Seasons 1 and 2.  Hopefully, this shutdown won’t result in a two-year gap between 2 […]

‘Bill & Ted’ Won’t Face ‘Mulan’; Theatrical And PVOD Release Bumped Up https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/06/bill-theatrical-and-pvod-release-bumped-up/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/06/bill-theatrical-and-pvod-release-bumped-up/#disqus_thread Thu, 06 Aug 2020 19:46:19 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354858 ‘Bill & Ted’ might be facing ‘The Music’, but Orion Pictures’ comedic reunion won’t face off against ‘Mulan’.  Two days ago, Disney made the bombshell announcement that the long-delayed live-action adaptation of ‘Mulan’ would only be released in theaters in places that did not have access to Disney+.  That means that in the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and other places that do have access, the film will skip cinemas for a PVOD (premium video on demand) release on September 4.  Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream ‘Mulan’ straight to their homes for the price of $29.99 (USD).  That may seem like a lot, but users will be able to watch ‘Mulan’ over and over to their heart’s desire for as long as they remain subscribed to Disney+.  It’s also pretty close to what two adult tickets would cost at a normal evening screening, and you won’t even have to spend an extra $40 on concessions. ‘Mulan’s production budget is reported to be approximately $200 million, so Disney needs to make at least twice that to break even.  This is a risky venture, but the company needs to do what it can to curb the billions it’s losing this year […]

The title is rather misleading.  Here is the actual synopsis of Rich’s short story (via Deadline): A father offers advice on what to say when their child says they believe a monster lurks under the bed — at a time when an ongoing Monster Uprising is actually happening in the world. The creature pandemic has unleashed the likes of Gorgog the Annihilator, Ctharga the Eater of Souls, and a “giant, swirling portal in the sky that looks like a screaming mouth” that is simply called Drain of Ga. Based on this description, it doesn’t appear that this film will have anything to do with Universal’s monster back catalog, Dracula, Frankenstein, etc. Rich is a former Emmy-nominated writer for ‘Saturday Night Live’ and he contributed to the script for […]

The video was shared via New Line’s Twitter account: Wonder what Annabelle has been up to in quarantine? Happy National Doll Day! pic.twitter.com/E6Dq2TtaLi — New Line Cinema (@newlinecinema) August 2, 2020 The video was released on Sunday in honor of National Doll Day.  The video was made by two New Line employees who went into the offices in July to pick up some equipment.  They decided to have some fun and filmed “Annabelle in Quarantine” on their iPhones (while social distancing and wearing face […]

San Diego Comic-Con’s @Home Event Was A Flop According To Social Media https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/27/san-diego-comic-cons-home-event-was-a-flop-according-to-social-media/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/27/san-diego-comic-cons-home-event-was-a-flop-according-to-social-media/#disqus_thread Mon, 27 Jul 2020 21:57:02 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354545 It appears that Comic-Con@Home was a bust.  Obviously, due to COVID-19, an actual in-person con couldn’t be held, so instead, organizers offered up streaming panels, featuring creators, cast members, and fans of popular comic books, TV shows, video games, and movies, and unlike the usual, these were absolutely free to everyone in the world. However, the social media analytics firm, ListenFirst, reports (via Variety) that buzz surrounding SDCC@Home was not just quieter than normal, it was practically muted.  Tweets mentioning SDCC@H were only 5% those of 2019’s Comic-Con!  That’s 93,681 tweets versus 1,719,000 last year.  Specifically, tweets about the TV show panels were down 93%, and those about movies were down a mindblowing 99%! Ironically, SDCC@H’s most viewed panel was for a movie– ‘The New Mutants’.  It has racked up over 208,000 views since its release last Thursday.  The ‘New Mutants’ panel offered a Q&A with director Josh Boone and the cast, a first look at the movie’s opening scene, a new trailer, and six posters, copies of which were raffled off to viewers. Then again, ironically, the trailer that was released on July 16, announcing the panel, has 303,000 views!  So more people have watched the advertisement for the […]

During the ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ SDCC@Home virtual panel, executive producer Paul Simms indicated that Season 3 will have a theme of searching.  While trying not to give too much away, Simms stated that Nandor might be searching for love, while Colin Robinson will explore his past– an origin so secret, not even he knows it. “Nandor might be searching for love. Colin Robinson still doesn’t know how he became an energy vampire–and he’s just rolled with it for all these years, so that might be a search that he goes on.” One of the standout episodes of Season 2, “Colin’s Promotion” saw Colin Robinson experience a massive […]

Winter discussed the film’s Dickensian plot: “They laid out this very summary version of a piss-take on Dickens of going back into your life and finding that each iteration of your life was even worse than the previous. It was pretty damn funny… None of us really thought about embarking on a journey to make a third.  No one really needs it unless it’s really great we could somehow magically hold on to the creative well enough that it maintained its integrity of that initial idea and thus began a very long road.” That’s a pretty profound summary for such a boneheaded franchise!  (I mean […]

With the announcement of ‘The Boys” renewal, Kripke announced: “Amazon, in a bold and historic push to expand their ‘weirdo’ demographic, has greenlit Season 3 of ‘The Boys’. Alex Winter (Bill) made the announcement via Twitter.  He also shared a new trailer: The wait is over! @BillandTed3 will be released in the U.S. on September 1st on video-on-demand and in select theaters! Enjoy our brand new trailer and remember to be excellent! 🤟 #BillAndTed3 #FaceTheMusic pic.twitter.com/unNJGpflDe — Alex Winter 😷 (@Winter) July 23, 2020 There are no specific details, but generally speaking, PVODs are about $20 for 48 hours.  When ‘SCOOB!’ came out, it cost $20 to rent for 48 hours, or $24.99, to buy and keep forever.  I’m not sure why anyone would pick the rental option. So far, the PVOD release plan has proven successful for movies like […]

Via Deadline: Based on Rich’s short story of the same title, the film follows the ghost of a silent film-era actress that has haunted the titular soundstage of a backlot for decades. After a struggling director meets the ghost, they find an unexpected kinship and team to make their mark on the world. Rich is a five-time Emmy nominee, who has published two novels and five short story collections.  “Stage 13” was first published in his collection ‘Hits and Misses’ which won the 2019 Thurber Prize for American Humor. Wright’s film ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World’ was a box office flop, but has developed a cult following and is currently celebrating its ten year anniversary.  Wright and most of the cast recently participated in a virtual table read in its honor. He first gained notice for directing the “Corneto Trilogy” of movies starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost– ‘Shaun of the Dead’, ‘Hott Fuzz’, and ‘The […]

Previously, Robbie discussed the movie, saying: “The story in Birds of Prey is told from her point of view, so you have an insight into Harley’s world in a way that you didn’t in the first Suicide Squad film, nor that you’ll have in the next Suicide Squad film. It’s a little bonkers. It reflects her personality. It’s heightened. It’s poppy, it’s fun, it’s violent, it’s crazy. It’s absurd. It’s […]

Commander Andy Billups, the direct boss of Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ was created by Emmy Award-winner Mike McMahan (‘Rick & Morty’, ‘Solar Opposites’).  The first season will consist of 10 30-minute episodes, which follow the exploits of the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos, one of the least important ships in Starfleet.  And while the Bridge Crew factors into the show, the main focus is on the “essential workers” toiling in the ‘Lower Decks’, doing the jobs no one else wants to do. In addition to Rutherford, the Lower Decks crew includes Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), and Ensign Tendi (Noël Wells).  Their more glamorous and glorious Bridge counterparts include Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis), Commander Jack Ransom (Jerry O’Connell), Lieutenant Shaxs (Fred Tatasciore), and Doctor T’Ana (Gillian Vigman). Scheer is an alumnus of the Upright Citizens Brigade and starred on the Comedy Central series of the […]

Not surprisingly, ‘Harley Quinn’ has been renewed for a third batch.  Fans were startled and delighted that, like in the comics, Harley (Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) wound up as a romantic couple on the show.  Showrunner Justin Halpern promises that viewers can look forward to further exploration of this dynamic […]
