Hot on the heels of the recent news that Jamie Foxx will be reprising his franchise-jumping role of Electro in ‘Spider-Man 3,’ news has broken today that Benedict Cumberbatch will appear as Doctor Strange in the film as well – and his appearance could potentially serve as an explanation of sorts for Electro’s presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Foxx’s Electro appeared once on-screen, in 2014’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’  This, of course, is not the direct sequel to the upcoming Spider-Man film, but rather the end of Sony’s failed attempt to bring Spidey back to the big screen with Andrew Garfield in the lead role.  Sony does still own the rights to Spider-Man and related characters, but they have struck a deal with Marvel to incorporate the hero, now portrayed on-screen by Tom Holland, into the MCU.  The deal was at risk of expiring late last year, but the two companies worked it out, and Marvel is now set to produce ‘Spider-Man 3,’ the first film in this trilogy which they will be so doing. So, that’s a long-winded way to say that Foxx’s […]

Created by legendary Marvel Comics powerhouses Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Kang made his first appearance in 1964 in ‘The Avengers’ comic-book series and has had a long and illustrious career of tormenting pretty much every major Marvel hero and team, including the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Inhumans, and the X-Men.  Here’s the character’s brief description from Wikipedia: Kang the Conqueror is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character is most frequently depicted as an opponent of the Avengers. A time-traveling entity, several alternate versions of Kang have appeared throughout Marvel’s titles over the years, including his respective future and past heroic selves, Immortus and Iron Lad. In 2009, Kang was ranked as IGN’s 65th-greatest comic book villain of all time. Starring in the as-yet-untitled […]

Tom Holland’s Next ‘Spider-Man’ Movie Has Been Delayed Again https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/24/tom-hollands-next-spider-man-movie-has-been-delayed-again/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/24/tom-hollands-next-spider-man-movie-has-been-delayed-again/#disqus_thread Fri, 24 Jul 2020 13:00:46 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354420 ‘Spider-Man 3’ has been postponed again.  It was originally scheduled for release on July 16, 2021, but was delayed until November 5, 2021.  It has now been pushed back to December 17, 2021.  This only pertains to its opening in the US, so it’s possible that Sony is taking into account that the COVID-19 situation is likely going to get better elsewhere before it does in the United States. Tom Holland is expected to film ‘Uncharted’, also for Sony, before ‘Spider-Man’.  ‘Uncharted’ is based on a video game series that spans the globe, and it was set to film in Spain and Germany.  The European Union is set to open back up to film and television projects, so production could begin soon.  Ruben Fleischer is directing this picture.  Holland plays adventurer Nathan Drake, with Mark Wahlberg as his mentor, Victor “Sully” Sullivan.  Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali, and Tati Gabrielle co-star.  ‘Uncharted’ is currently scheduled to open on July 16, 2021. Though not much is known about Holland’s third ‘Spider-Man’, it was reportedly going to film in New York City Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Iceland (!).  (Atlanta, at least, is opening up for productions.)  Director Jon Watts is confirmed to be […]

The Falcon and possibly the next Captain America, while Don Cheadle portrays War-Machine/James Rhodes.  But even though Mackie is set to co-headline the Disney+ series ‘Falcon & Winter Soldier’, he thinks Marvel Studios and parent company Disney could do a lot more to increase diversity behind the camera. In a dual interview with ‘Snowpiercer’s Daveed Diggs, Mackie lamented: “When ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ comes out, I’m the lead.  When ‘Snowpiercer’ came out, you’re the lead. We have the power and the ability to ask those questions. It really bothered me that I’ve done seven Marvel movies where every producer, every director, every stunt person, every costume designer, every PA, every single person has been white. “We’ve had one Black producer; his name was Nate Moore.  He produced ‘Black Panther.’ But then when you do ‘Black Panther,’ you have a Black director, Black producer, a Black costume designer, a Black stunt choreographer. Speaking to Comicbook.com, Cox reacted by saying: “I hadn’t heard those rumors, but it’s certainly not with my Daredevil. I’m not involved in it.  If that’s true, it’s not with me. It’s with another actor.” This should come as no surprise for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that Marvel Studios and its president Kevin Feige seem content to pretend the Netflix Marvel shows never existed.  While they were envisioned as an extension to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they absolutely don’t fit with the family-friendly tone of the movies.  Add to that the fact that Marvel Studios broke away from parent company Marvel Entertainment and Marvel Television and was set up as its own entity under Disney.  Now Marvel TV has essentially been dissolved and Feige is in charge of all projects from the comics to screens and his vision for television is focused pretty much solely on the upcoming slate of […]

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced ‘She-Hulk’ last August along with two other Disney+ shows featuring characters that will be new to live-action, ‘Moon Knight’ and ‘Ms. Marvel’.  This is the second wave of Marvel Studios shows coming to the streaming service, and the first wave — ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, ‘WandaVision’, ‘Loki’, and ‘Hawkeye’ — hasn’t started airing yet, so there will be a while before ‘She-Hulk’ and the rest arrive, but that doesn’t mean that work isn’t going on behind the scenes.   RELATED:  Emmy Winning Jessica Gao Is Going To Write ‘She-Hulk’ For Disney+   Okay, just to clarify, this information comes from Illuminerdy via anonymous sources, so don’t take any of […]

The details of this huge moment in Marvel movie history came from a recent interview with actor Haaz Sleiman.  Last August, it was confirmed by Marvel Studios Kevin Feige that ‘The Eternals’ would feature a gay couple. Feige described the super-powered character by saying, “He’s married, he’s got a family and that is just part of who he is.” In an interview with Logo, Lebanese-American actor Haaz Sleiman, who proudly identifies as “a gay, Muslim, Arab American man,” revealed that he will star in the upcoming superhero flick ‘The Eternals’ as one half of Marvel’s first openly gay couple.   RELATED: Kevin Feige Confirms A Gay Male Character In ‘Eternals’; Pardon Me While I Yawn   According to Sleiman, “I’m married to the gay superhero Phastos, played by ‘Atlanta’s’ Brian Tyree Henry, and we represent a gay family and have a child.” The actor confirmed that the film would also include the MCU’s first gay kiss, stating, “Oh, yeah, absolutely, and it’s a beautiful, very moving kiss. Robert Cargill and Jon Spaihts.  But according to Cargill, he and Derrickson had not written a script for ‘Multiverse of Madness’ prior to Derrickson’s departure. According to Cargill on Twitter: Since it keeps coming up in news stories, it’s worth noting that Scott and I never had the opportunity to write a draft of MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS, so whatever they are working with now isn’t derivative of our work. I am of course very excited to see where they take Stephen next. — C. Robert Cargill (@Massawyrm) February 8, 2020 It was just announced last week that Michael Waldron, writer of the upcoming ‘Loki’ series on Disney+, has stepped in to pen the screenplay for ‘Multiverse of Madness’.  In October, it was reported that Jade Halley Bartlett (‘The Turning’) was writing it, but that doesn’t appear to be true. Waldron previously worked as a writer and production assistant on ‘Rick and Morty’, and he is writing and executive producing ‘Heels’, the upcoming wrestling-based series set to star […]

Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong will both return as Doctor Stephen Strange and Wong, roles they originated in the first ‘Doctor Strange’ and reprised in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’.  It hasn’t been confirmed, but rumors suggest that Chiwetel Ejiofor will be back as Mordo, Strange’s onetime ally, who has since vowed to eliminate all sorcerers. Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch will also co-star in ‘Multiverse of Madness’.  Her Disney+ series, ‘WandaVision, which arrives this December, will lead directly into this new film. In December, Kevin Feige teased that ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ would introduce a character that fans would never expect to see.  As he stated: “The next Doctor Strange film, for instance, features some new MCU characters which will be making their debut in that movie you won’t expect or won’t guess who it is but we found a cool way to make it work because we want to make a particular type of movie there and there was a character who we always wanted to do something with who will fit really well there.” Well, it appears that someone may have figured out why this mystery character is– America Chavez. It appears that in casting notes obtained by The Illuminerdy seem to hint that this character will appear in ‘Multiverse of Madness’ and it would make sense, as America Chavez hails from another dimension called the Utopian Parallel.  She spent time bouncing around to different dimensions before arriving in Marvel’s 616 Universe, where she spent time as a member of the Young Avengers, A-Force, The Ultimates, and the West Coast Avengers. Radcliffe starred in eight blockbuster ‘Harry Potter’ movies from 2001-2011.  And as it turns out, these pictures made an impression on the very powerful Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios.  While Marvel has created a unique film experience, with its interlocking shared universe, it still has to draw inspiration from movies that have come before it, and Feige cites Warner Brothers’ ‘Potter’ brand as inspiration in particular area — creating a mythology that is entertaining to general audiences while still pleasing fans who have embraced the movies after having already been devoted readers of the comics.
