Before ‘The Walking Dead,’ however, Kirkman and artist Cory Walker co-created another title for Image: the son-of-a-famous-superhero-gets-powers-of-his-own tale ‘Invincible,’ and it was a massive hit.  Praised as a more realistic take on a superhero story, the series ran for 144 issues from 2003 to 2018.  Once set to be adapted into a feature film, ‘Invincible’ finds life as an adult-oriented animated series on Amazon’s Prime Video, coming to audiences next year in what’s reported to be an hour-long each, 8-episode first season. The voice cast for the new series is impressively long, and reads as a “who’s who” of genre stalwarts mixed with several mainstays of ‘The Walking Dead’ TV series.  Ranging from recurring roles to one-off appearances, the announced cast includes Steven Yeun as Mark Grayson/Invincible, J. K. Simmons as Nolan Grayson/Omni-Man, Sandra Oh as Debbie Grayson, Mark Hamill […]

Ackles made the announcement via a video on Instagram:   View this post on Instagram   I keep wondering what I’ll do….when @cw_supernatural finally ends this year. Then it hit me. *volume ⬆️ A post shared by Jensen Ackles (@jensenackles) on Aug 17, 2020 at 9:04am PDT ‘The Boys’ is based on the comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, and was developed for television by ‘Supernatural’ creator Eric Kripke.  In a statement, Kripke announced: “When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream — to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employmen.  I’m happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother. As Soldier Boy, the very first superhero, he’ll bring so much humor, pathos, and danger to the role. I can’t wait to be on […]

It appears that on the show, Lamplighter was the reason The Boys broke up years ago eight years prior to the start of the series, driving a wedge between Mallory and Butcher, and between Frenchie (Tomer Kapon) and Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso).  According to Amazon, “So when he enters their lives again, he dredges up painful memories, pokes at their raw nerves, and changes everything.” In the image above, Ashmore is shown to be in The Seven’s headquarters, but it’s possible this is a flashback.  In the comic books, Lamplighter (in yellow) was turned over to The Boys by The Seven after he killed Mallory’s grandchildren.  The Boys killed him, but he was somehow reanimated although he was nearly braindead and constantly soiled himself.  […]

The even more intense, more insane Season 2 finds The Boys on the run from the law, hunted by the Supes, and desperately trying to regroup and fight back against Vought. In hiding, Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon), and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) try to adjust to a new normal, with Butcher (Karl Urban) nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, Starlight (Erin Moriarty) must navigate her place in The Seven as Homelander (Antony Starr) sets his sights on taking complete control. His power is threatened with the addition of Stormfront (Aya Cash), a social-media-savvy new Supe, who has an agenda of her own. On top of that, the Supervillain threat takes center stage and makes waves as Vought seeks to capitalize on the nation’s paranoia. Of all the new pics, this is the one I find most shocking and possibly disturbing! What’s going on here?!  Why is Starlight holding hands with Homelander?  And why does […]

Amazon’s ‘Utopia’ Will Be Much Less Violent Than The British Original https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/07/amazons-utopia-will-be-much-less-violent-than-the-british-original/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/07/amazons-utopia-will-be-much-less-violent-than-the-british-original/#disqus_thread Fri, 07 Aug 2020 13:00:27 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354870 The original British series ‘Utopia’ lasted for two six-episode seasons, airing in 2013 and ’14.  The story revolved around four comic book nerds who find themselves being pursued by a mysterious organization called The Network after they obtain a copy of the unpublished sequel to their favorite graphic novel, ‘The Utopia Experiments’.  It seems the sequel contains information that The Network doesn’t want anyone else to learn. Dennis Kelly created the series, which was directed by Marc Munden.  ‘Utopia’ was generally favorably received, with high praise going to Munden’s eye-popping visual style and use of bold colors.  However, the show was widely criticized for excessive violence, with members of the viewing audience going so far as to make official complaints, particularly about a scene that depicted a school shooting. After a failed attempt by HBO, Amazon Prime Video picked up the rights to make a US adaptation, and novelist/screenwriter/producer Gillian Flynn (‘Gone Girl’, ‘Sharp Objects’) was selected to act as showrunner.  And while it seems the US version borrows some of the vibrant visuals of the original, Flynn says that it will be much less violent. At the Television Critics Association annual fall press tour (held virtually this year), Flynn […]

The Cast Of ‘The Boys’ Urge You To “Wear A F***ing Mask!” https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/07/the-cast-of-the-boys-urge-you-to-wear-a-fing-mask/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/07/the-cast-of-the-boys-urge-you-to-wear-a-fing-mask/#disqus_thread Fri, 07 Aug 2020 11:00:05 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354879 It seems a truce has been called between The Boys and The Seven… or at least the actors that play them.  From quarantine, they have teamed-up– Karl Urban (Billy Butcher), Jack Quaid (Hughie Campbell), Laz Alonso (Mother’s Milk), Aya Cash (Stormfront), Karen Fukuhara (Kimiko), Tomer Kapon (Frenchie), Erin Moriarty (Starlight), Antony Starr (Homelander), and Jessie T. Usher (A-Train)– to record a message urging viewers to “Wear a f***ing mask,” so that, as Urban says, “you will help stop the transmission of this nasty f***ing disease.” As Quaid stated: “You want a ‘Boys’ Season 3?  They’re not gonna let us shoot unless we get the numbers down.  So please…” Karen Fukuhara also has a special message for all those other Karens out there. Check out the PSA courtesy of Collider‘s Twitter account: An important message from @TheBoysTV#WearAMask pic.twitter.com/LljaQVkcUa — Collider (@Collider) August 6, 2020 Considering that pretty much everything about ‘The Boys’ is pretty profane, it makes sense that a PSA would be too. Technically, Amazon has already renewed ‘The Boys’ for a third season, but there was already a gap of over a year between Seasons 1 and 2.  Hopefully, this shutdown won’t result in a two-year gap between 2 […]

Final ‘The Boys’ S2 Trailer May Introduce The Deadliest Supe Yet + Posters https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/05/final-the-boys-s2-trailer-may-introduce-the-deadliest-supe-yet-posters/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/05/final-the-boys-s2-trailer-may-introduce-the-deadliest-supe-yet-posters/#disqus_thread Wed, 05 Aug 2020 12:00:19 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354816 The anticipation for the sophomore installment of ‘The Boys’ is only increasing.  (Is it really STILL a month away?!)  Hopefully, this final trailer will be enough to tide fans over until then.  We already know that The Seven, down a couple of members after S1, will induct a new member who may be a bigger pain in Homelander‘s ass than Billy Butcher!  Stormfront (Aya Cash) is an electricity slinging superhuman who is very adept at using social media to stir up a rabid fanbase, by playing into fear of super terrorists, such as Naquib (or  “The Captain,” Krishan Dutt), the explosive Arabian Supe whose secret origin was tied to Homelander himself.  If Stormfront’s personality plays out the way it did in the comics, viewers should expect the new season to frighteningly reflect some of the conflicts we’re experiencing in the real world right now. But beyond, Stormfront and Homelander, the new trailer offers a glimpse of another new Supe that may be the deadliest yet.  It is a Caucasian male with blond hair, but not much is known about him yet.  But he is seen spilling a lot of blood.  Then again, there’s plenty of blood to go around. The […]

Starr revealed: “Of course he is always gonna be looking for a new mommy, or maybe daddy who knows?  It’s life without Stillwell and what does that mean? What do you do when you’re on your own? And you’re seeing in the clips, you’ve seen some interesting feeding habits that he developed and, you know I don’t think I’m spoiling anything there. I’ve seen a lot on social media. People are kind of interested in what’s going on with that, but now it’s a really fun season and I’m really excited for people to see where we took the character.” Viewers have also seen that while these Supes have sterling reputations in the public eye, most of them are the sleaziest individuals imaginable.  But don’t expect more heroes behaving badly simply […]

The show’s version doesn’t have the same origin.  (Not sure why.  It was actually very powerful in the book.) As Alonso explained: “Garth [Ennis] had taken this character and molded him after — in theory — after the crack babies, of the ’80s, where he was physically infected with an addiction to V.  That’s not the case [on the show], so what is he infected with?  [Showrunner Eric Kripke] kind of beautifully created this […]

The adult animated series is due to arrive on Amazon Prime Video at an undisclosed point. The latest ‘Walking Dead’ recruits will voice the Justice League pastiche The Guardians of the Globe.  Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie on ‘TWD’, will voice War Woman with Chad Coleman (Tyreese) as Martian Man, Michael Cudlitz (Abraham) as Red Rush, Lennie James (Morgan) as Darkwing, Ross Marquand (Aaron) as The Immortal and Aquarius, and Sonequa Martin-Green as Green Ghost. With the announcement of ‘The Boys” renewal, Kripke announced: “Amazon, in a bold and historic push to expand their ‘weirdo’ demographic, has greenlit Season 3 of ‘The Boys’.
