In 2012, comic-book publisher IDW decided it was high time to combine two of their most high-profile sci-fi properties for a feature event: ‘Star Trek The Next Generation’ and ‘Doctor Who.’  IDW is no stranger to mashing-up two or more of their series, as they routinely do with many of their licensed […]

Doctor Who Fans Have Voted On Who Is The All-Time Best Doctor https://sciencefiction.com/2020/10/01/doctor-who-fans-have-voted-on-who-is-the-all-time-best-doctor/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/10/01/doctor-who-fans-have-voted-on-who-is-the-all-time-best-doctor/#disqus_thread Thu, 01 Oct 2020 15:17:33 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=355235 With a strange production schedule that will only provide one lonely new episode of ‘Doctor Who’ this calendar year (the “holiday special” episode titled “Revolution of the Daleks, currently slated to air in December 2020), fans have been starving for content about everyone’s favorite oft-regenerating space-traveling Time Lord.  Thanks to a recent poll, at least now we have a definitive(ish) answer to which incarnation of the Doctor is the favorite among the show’s fans. Popular UK site RadioTimes conducted a poll of over 50,000 fans recently, and the results were quite a close race – but in the end, the victor was the Tenth Doctor, brought to life on-screen by David Tennant from 2005-2010.  It’s clear that fans have a special place in their hearts for the modern-era Doctors, as Tennant’s first-place finish was a less than 1% margin of victor over the current Thirteenth Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, and third-place finisher Peter Capaldi, aka the Twelfth Doctor.  As RadioTimes reports of Tennant and Whittaker’s “photo finish:” Both actors took 21% of the overall poll vote with over 10,000 votes apiece, with Tennant squeaking ahead with just 100 extra votes in the final count. At other points, Whittaker had been leading […]

‘Game Of Thrones’ Is “Officially” Crowned The Best TV Show Of The 21st Century https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/31/game-of-thrones-is-officially-crowned-the-best-tv-show-of-the-21st-century/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/31/game-of-thrones-is-officially-crowned-the-best-tv-show-of-the-21st-century/#disqus_thread Fri, 31 Jul 2020 13:00:29 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354677 TV in 2000 was in a sad state, as remnants from the ’90s like ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ and ‘Boy Meets World’ left the airwaves and reality TV swept the world with the first seasons of ‘Survivor’ and ‘Big Brother’ leading to an onslaught of bottom-feeder horrors like ‘Who Wants to Marry A Multi-Millionnaire’, on which two strangers were married on live television, invaded the boob tube. But what a difference 20 years makes, as TV is now turning out projects that blow away theatrical films in terms of emotional weight and jaw-dropping shockers.  TV of the 2000s and 20-teens has hosted such winners as ‘The Sopranos’, ‘Mad Men’, ‘Dexter’, ‘Sons of Anarchy’, ‘The West Wing’, ‘Downton Abbey’, and sooooo many more.  Nowadays, streaming is king, delivering newer buzzy hits like ‘Fleabag’, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, and ‘Orange is the New Black’. But what are the absolute BEST shows of the 21st century?  The UK’s Digital Spy asked readers that very question.  In honor of their first digital issue, available through Amazon News+, the publication took a poll, and the results…? Well, for starters, none of the shows I mentioned are on the list. Hoist your chalice!  ‘Game of Thrones’ has “officially” […]

He then sent the script to various co-stars from ‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’ and ‘Doctor Who’, who acted out their parts separately before they were edited together.  The episode is tied together by narrator Jacob Dudman, who has previously voiced the Doctor himself in various audio dramas. Among the actors featured […]

An inside source revealed to The Mirror: “Two years is a long time in the world of Doctor Who. Yaz will be back but Christmas will be the last outing for Ryan and Graham.” The holiday special has already been filmed, and it is known that the principal antagonists will be the Daleks.  It has not yet been announced whether this episode will air on Christmas or New Years Day.  The reason for Graham and Ryan’s departures is unknown.   RELATED:  BBC Gives Fans An Early Christmas Gift With A ‘Doctor Who’ “Festive” Episode   In the U.S., Walsh is pretty much exclusively known […]

Many fans were understandably dismayed at the news, but it seems Chibnall has had a change of heart! This year, he brought back the Judoon and Cyberman and a thrilling three-part ending for Season 12 – and it doesn’t stop there! At the end of Sunday’s ‘Doctor Who’ finale, fans were left with a doozy of a cliffhanger and were left wondering what happens next? Will we have to wait through another drought of no episodes for almost a year before witnessing the resolution of the Doctor’s fate?   RELATED:  Is This Classic ‘Doctor Who’ Theory The Key To “The Fugitive Of The Judoon?”   As Chibnall exclaimed: “We can’t leave the Doctor there! The last remaining humans are hunted down. Lies are exposed, truths are revealed. And for the Doctor, nothing will ever be the same. In the trailer for this weekend’s episode, the Cybermen can indeed be seen “on the march,” as they have been amassing over the past few episodes.  This episode also promises to bring the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) confronting The (new) Master (Sacha Dhawan), who previously teased her (and viewers) with the ominous revelation: “They lied to us.  Everything we were told was a lie. We are not who we think. You or I. The whole existence of […]

Chibnall’s first season with Whittaker as the first female Doctor left fans divided. With a new Doctor and the declaration that his first run would all be standalone episodes with no familiar foes, Season 11 was a bumpy regeneration for the series. When Season 12 was announced, Chibnall seemingly embraced what worked in the past and re-established two-part episodes and brought back the Cyberman and the Judoon.  Two years since the Season 11 finale would pass before the series would return, but the wait was worth it with the surprising return of the Master and Captain Jack. In the upcoming episode of ‘Doctor Who’, The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and her companions visit the Villa Diodati on the fateful night when Mary was supposed to deliver her spooky tale… except in reality, it seems Mary just wants to dance!   RELATED: ‘Doctor Who’: Chris Chibnall Discusses Upcoming ‘Frankenstein’-Inspired Episode “The Haunting Of Villa Diodati”   Even though The Doctor has explicitly warned her companions not to interfere with history, it seems that she must step in to coax Mary to come up with ‘Frankenstein’ as history has chronicled. This got fans thinking, why didn’t The Doctor use this same technique to save former companion Adric (Matthew Waterhouse) who died during the “Earthshock” storyline, in a very similar manner.  This was Season 19 of the classic series, which aired in 1982, with Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, and Adric is one of the few companions who was shown to have actually and definitively died.  However, his death came in a way that was close to Jake’s near-death, in a spacecraft that crashed into Earth before The Doctor could save him.  So longtime fans are curious as to how the Thirteenth Doctor could pull off this rescue when the Fifth couldn’t.   RELATED: ‘Doctor Who’: Chris Chibnall Confirms Jo Martin’s Character Is THE Doctor     […]
