The post-credits scene has become a staple of the comic book movie genre. Though it has really become a signature for Marvel Studios, almost every major superhero blockbuster has one to tease the audience with whatever comes next. And based on recent reports, the Merc With A Mouth will follow the trend when he finally arrives in theaters next month with his own X-Men spinoff.
Earlier this week, Fox surprised fans in Los Angeles and New York City that were expecting a special preview of ‘Deadpool’ with a screening of the “unfinished cut” of the film instead. But according to Cinemablend, apparently the crowd in LA were treated to an extra special treat when their screening featured a post-credits scene. While the site wouldn’t share what happened in this scene, they did speculate that it wasn’t finished yet, which is why it didn’t make the trip to the east coast. There’s a possibility that it could have been thrown into the cut at the last minute, but if it wasn’t complete enough to be included in the cut that was sent to NYC, does that mean that it’s only a piece of what we’ll see in the final cut? After all, when writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick spoke to Collider in November, they teased a pretty epic post-credits scene:
“There is a post credit thing that if hopefully comes together. It’s gonna be phenomenal. We’re planning it. It’s one of those ones that’s gonna require some doing, so it may not come together, and if so, I don’t know, we’ll either do a plan b or none at all. I think we should have one, I mean, we really feel like we should have one.”
Despite being described as “phenomenal” by the writers, Cinemablend said that the scene (if it is, in fact, the finished product) was “underwhelming by comparison [to the other X-Men post-credits scenes]– a final joke, rather than a hint of what’s to come”. Even if that were the case, that’s pretty in line with what Wade Wilson would do. He’d probably use his post-credits scene to mock the audience for staying for so long after the movie was over. Or he could start making fun of people in the credits. But no matter what Deadpool decides to do when his movie is over, make sure to stick around in that theater to find out.
