Starting its life in comic-book form back in 1977, Marvel’s series told alternate-reality tales about heroes and characters that readers knew well.  The first issue was titled “What if… Spider-Man Joined the Fantastic Four?” and it set the precedent that readers would be seeing, essentially, the early stages of what would eventually become known as The Multiverse. Now that the stories have shifted onto the television screen with the first season of “What If…?,” the tales being told are directly connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its version of classic Marvel characters.  The nine episodes in the inaugural season revolved around tales of alternate versions of The Avengers, Black Panther, Ultron, Doctor Strange, zombies, and more! While the complete list of episodes for Season 2 hasn’t been officially released yet, several leaks claim to outline the entire season.  Items that have been confirmed by Disney include […]

Prepare Yourself For The Next Great Spy Thriller Movie: ‘Tetris?’ https://sciencefiction.com/2023/02/17/prepare-yourself-for-the-next-great-spy-thriller-movie-tetris/ https://sciencefiction.com/2023/02/17/prepare-yourself-for-the-next-great-spy-thriller-movie-tetris/#disqus_thread Fri, 17 Feb 2023 14:00:27 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=355787 There are certain video games that have a natural path that can be traced in terms of what a move about that game would be about.  Assassin’s Creed and time-travel undercover ops.  Uncharted and a treasure-hunting mystery.  Sonic the Hedgehog and a fast blue animal with rings.  Super Mario Bros and plumbing.  And the like. So, when the news came down about an upcoming film called ‘Tetris,’ it makes one’s brain start to think of the possibilities: will this be a movie along the same lines as Hasbro’s now-scuttled plans for turning its games into film properties?  Will it be a tale about giant blocky alien ships invading Earth, and the only way for us to defeat them is to get them lined up next to each other so our missiles can make them “disappear?”  (I’d watch that, probably.)  Could it be a horror movie based on an ancient puzzle, and when the pieces align just so, it sends the user into a shadowy nether-realm?  (I’d definitely watch that.) Well, no, that’s all wrong – and probably the furthest thing from our mind is actually the correct answer: ‘Tetris’ will be an espionage-style thriller, telling the true(ish) story of how the game […]

Netflix has revealed that the newest iteration of the series, ‘Stone Ocean,’ will be premiering globally on the streaming service this coming December.  Check out the official series description and first teaser trailer: Florida, U.S.A, 2011 — After an accident while on a drive with her sweetheart, Jolyne Cujoh falls into a trap and is sentenced to fifteen years at the state-run maximum-security correctional facility Green Dolphin Street Prison—AKA “the Aquarium.” On the verge of despair, she receives a pendant from her father that causes a mysterious power to awaken inside of her. “There are things in this world that are more terrifying than death, and what’s happening in this prison is definitely one of them.” A message from a mysterious boy who appears before Jolyne, inexplicable events that occur one after another, the horrifying truth told to her by her father when […]

Throwback Thursday: ‘Kolchak: The Night Stalker’ (1974) https://sciencefiction.com/2021/05/13/throwback-thursday-kolchak-the-night-stalker/ https://sciencefiction.com/2021/05/13/throwback-thursday-kolchak-the-night-stalker/#disqus_thread Thu, 13 May 2021 20:30:10 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=355607 Have you ever stumbled across, as an adult, a TV series or movie you used to watch as a kid? Sometimes it fills you with a sense of nostalgia to re-connect with the scenes you remember seeing while you were growing up, but sometimes the experience can also be a rude awakening: can you believe that this sort of thing actually used to entertain you? What were you thinking? There’s always a chance your experience will end negatively instead of positively when re-discovering something from your past that you used to know and love. Recently, I was able to catch up, via the magic of online streaming, with a TV show I watched on the SciFi (now SyFy) Channel during my impressionable years as a young teenager, ‘Kolchak: The Night Stalker’ (streaming for free on the NBC app; available for purchase on the Amazon, Apple+, and Google Play apps). To be clear: when I watched the show in my youth, I was watching it in syndication; the show enjoyed its original short-lived run from 1974-1975, building off the success of two made-for-TV movies about the titular character, Carl Kolchak, a reporter with a penchant for investigating stories of the strange […]

Speaking about what the original 1980s cartoon series meant to him, Smith had this to say: I watched all of the TV series growing up, it was everywhere in the ‘80s. These characters started off as toys and ended up becoming part of the global pop culture fabric. So much of this show has been possible because of the love and affection for this world at every level of production and the fandom surrounding this franchise. A big reason we got such top tier voice talent is because people genuinely want to be a part of this world. So many of us were touched by these stories and these characters early in our lives […]

As a perfect example: coming hot on the heels of ‘Falcon and Winter Soldier’ after that series concludes is the series that may be the most eagerly anticipated of all the Marvel small-screen work, the Tom Hiddleston-led ‘Loki’ mini-series. Seeming to pick up Loki’s story pretty much immediately following when audiences last saw him – opportunistically stealing the Tesseract during the time-hopping chaos of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ – the God of Mischief looks to have gotten himself mixed up with the Time Variance Authority (TVA).  The TVA appears to function as a sort of space-time regulatory force, and from the hints we’ve been given so far, it would seem that Loki’s action have caused some temporal ripples that need ironed out, with the god’s semi-unwilling assistance, of course. From Disney, the “official” description of the series is as follows: Watch Loki—the imperious God of Mischief—who, after absconding with the Tesseract, is a fish-out-of-water when he […]

Family Friendly Sci-Fi Mystery-Adventure Series ‘Secrets Of Sulphur Springs’ Coming To Disney+ https://sciencefiction.com/2021/02/22/family-friendly-sci-fi-mystery-adventure-series-secrets-of-sulphur-springs-coming-to-disney/ https://sciencefiction.com/2021/02/22/family-friendly-sci-fi-mystery-adventure-series-secrets-of-sulphur-springs-coming-to-disney/#disqus_thread Mon, 22 Feb 2021 16:15:53 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=355523 In the wide-ranging world of science fiction and suspenseful mystery-adventure fare, it can sometimes be a challenge to find content that is suitable for all ages.  I myself have a 3-year-old son and an eleven-year-old daughter, and much of what I watch on TV and movies I feel like I cannot share with one or both of them; for example, although my daughter is now well-versed in every recorded moment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I obviously am not sitting down to a viewing of ‘Event Horizon’ with her anytime soon, and even the MCU stuff was only borderline appropriate to share with her up until a year or two ago. It’s great to find, then, a series that encompasses some mystery, some intrigue, a dash of supernatural horror, and even a little sci-fi by way of time travel, AND have said series be completely accessible to all ages.  Such is the case with ‘Secrets of Sulphur Springs,’ an original series that is coming to Disney+ on February 26 of this year. The series will drop 5 episodes on its first day being on the streaming service, with new episodes following every Friday through the season finale on April 9th.  […]

A New ‘Buck Rogers’ TV Show, Featuring George Clooney, Is Heading To TV https://sciencefiction.com/2021/02/02/a-new-buck-rogers-tv-show-featuring-george-clooney-is-heading-to-tv/ https://sciencefiction.com/2021/02/02/a-new-buck-rogers-tv-show-featuring-george-clooney-is-heading-to-tv/#disqus_thread Tue, 02 Feb 2021 20:26:34 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=355510 It’s no secret that we live in a world of remakes, re-imaginings, reboots, revivals, and whatever other “re-” words you can think of that indicate Hollywood loves to take old properties and bring them back with a fresh spin – some, admittedly, fresher than others. As first reported by The Wrap, Legendary Entertainment is planning a multi-format revival of the Buck Rogers franchise, with reported plans starting with TV series that will hopefully branch into a companion film franchise and even an accompanying anime-style animated series.  The TV series will be up first, and will be produced by long-time Hollywood stalwart George Clooney.  The Wrap reports that Legendary also intends Clooney to star in the series – likely not as Buck Rogers – but a following report from Variety refutes the notion that Clooney will appear on-camera in any significant way in the franchise. A bit of back-story on the character of Buck Rogers and the franchise, from the original report: “The project is based on the characters and concepts introduced in the 1928 novella ‘Armageddon 2419 A.D.’ by Philip Francis Nowlan. The story followed ‘Anthony Rogers,’ a mining engineer from the 20th century who awakens from suspended animation after […]

In any case, the appearance of the CGIed Young Skywalker was likely the biggest surprise to come from the series, which in an of itself is an impressive feat, as the show has routine dropped surprise after surprise for viewers in the form of cameos, fan-favorite characters from other media, and lets not forget about the pretty huge bombshell all the way back in the first episode about the appearance of Baby Yoda Grogu in an of itself. Believe it or not, however, the inclusion of Luke into the series’ story arc was not something that was in the mix from the get-go.  Showrunner Jon Favreau, in a recent interview, was asked directly about this, and his answer shed quite the light on his process: “No. The story unfolded as I wrote it. ‘The Mandalorian’ inherits a great deal from existing Star […]

The first thing that jumps out at the viewer upon engaging with the new series is that this is definitely NOT your typical entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  It’s no secret that the previews have shown the episodes with a decidedly “classic TV sitcom” type of vibe, and this is the general format that the show follows, with each episode “taking place” in a different chronological sitcom era, progressing forward through time (at least, through the first trio of episodes, anyhow); the first episode is set in a 1950s type of ‘I Love Lucy’ vibe, with episode two wandering into the ‘Bewitched’ feel of the 1960s, and the third episode moves things smoothly into the 1970s, with some of the televised technological advances that came with that era. A unique point of the series is […]

Among the projects for Disney+ are “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” starring Ewan McGregor with Hayden Christensen returning as Darth Vader, and two series set in the Mandalorian era from Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni: “Rangers of the New Republic” and “Ahsoka,” a series featuring the fan favorite character Ahsoka Tano. This past week’s episode of ‘The Mandalorian’ is a prime example of why Disney simply refers to the each installment as “Chapter XX” until their actual air date.  If the average fan’s response is anything like my wife’s when she saw that this episode was titled “The Tragedy,” then most folks knew they were in for a serious emotional roller coaster.  (I believe her exact words were, “If that sweet, sweet Baby Yoda dies, I will burn Disney to the ground.”) Indeed, the episode was filled with suspense, intrigue, a return of not one but two previously-left-for-dead characters (one of whom was left for dead back in the 1980s, no less), and of course, the aforementioned tragedy (although, fortuitously, it wasn’t quite as bad as my wife thought it was going to be, and the Disney campus remains standing). Truly, the full on-screen return of fan-favorite Boba Fett is the headline-maker of this chapter; an impressive feat, considering that Mando lost Grogu back to the clutches […]

In 2012, comic-book publisher IDW decided it was high time to combine two of their most high-profile sci-fi properties for a feature event: ‘Star Trek The Next Generation’ and ‘Doctor Who.’  IDW is no stranger to mashing-up two or more of their series, as they routinely do with many of their licensed […]
