New horror tales can sometimes be a mixed bag, but it’s undeniable that the genre routinely puts forth some of the most unique and original stories of any area of entertainment today. So when a new idea comes around, it’s wise for fans to give it, whatever “it” may be, a good look. News came over the weekend about ‘Basilisk,’ a new horror-themed comic-book series coming next month from BOOM! Studios and long-time industry creator Cullen Bunn. Those who follow comics will recognize Bunn’s name from his work on such previous properties as the X-Men, Deadpool, Aquaman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Green Lantern, Moon Knight, and more. Bunn is also the creator of several comic series, most notably Harrow County, Bone Parish, and Dark Ark. With acclaimed artist Jonas Scharf handling the interior visuals, the series is front-loaded with enough star power for readers to get their money’s worth. Boom! Studios Signs A First-Look Deal To Develop Shows For Netflix

Multiple award-winning publisher Boom! Studios has signed a first-look deal with Netflix to produce live-action and animated series. Netflix won out after a “prolonged negotiation” during which other outlets also courted the publisher. Boom!’s catalog is considered one of the largest outside of Marvel and DC’s. Netflix vp of originals stated (via The Hollywood Reporter): “Boom! characters are innately special — they’re colorful, diverse and varied, and their stories have the power to ignite something in all of us. We can’t wait to bring these stories from the page to the screen to fans in every corner of the world.” Boom! Studios founder and CEO Ross Richie added: “We generate 20-plus new original series a year and are thrilled to partner with a company that is as prolific as we are. Boom!’s unique partnership model of controlling the media rights to our library benefits creators by positioning them to be packaged with high-end directors, screenwriters, and producers. There’s no question that long-time writer, editor, and creator Stan Lee forever changed the face of the comic book industry and, really, entertainment in general, through his creations and his work. Though its popularity may have peaked in the Nineties, ‘Power Rangers’ never really went away. But while the show has been chugging along in various forms for the last twenty-five years, it was the original team that got an unexpected boost with the launch of Boom! Studios’ ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ comic series. Under the pen of writer Kyle Higgins, the series re-imagined the titular teenagers with attitude in a more modern context and tailored their stories to a more mature audience than the TV show has traditionally targeted. A major focus of Higgins’ stories was the establishment of a mighty morphin’ multiverse, culminating in the introduction of Lord Drakkon, a villainous alternate version of Green Ranger Tommy Oliver. BOOM! Studios Is Set To Bring Us A ‘War For The Planet Of The Apes’ Comic!

With ‘War for the Planet of the Apes‘ set to debut in July, we’ve just learned that BOOM! Studios are set to bring us a comic that helps tell the events which take place between it and it’s 2014 predecessor ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.’ The comic lands on July 12th, 2017 which will only be two days before the feature film hits the big screen but that should be plenty of time to get to your local comic shop and read it, so you go into the movie with the complete story. As always with these companion pieces, it won’t be needed to understand the events in the movie but will undoubtedly shed some light on part of the plot. The book will be written by David F. Walker (‘Power Man and Iron Fist’,’Shaft’) and illustrated by Jonas Scharf (‘Warlords of Appalachia’). The publisher had previously released a ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ limited series before the release of the last film in the same style as this one. New ‘Kong’ Comic Book Miniseries Will Tell The Stories Immediately Preceding And Following The Film

With ‘Kong: Skull Island’ winning the box office this weekend, it’s inevitable that we were going to get more merchandise surrounding the property. This, however, is not necessarily a bad thing; the film has been a domestic and international hit with audiences – with our own review of the film being a glowing one as well – and there are of course those plans to have Kong and Godzilla mix it up in their upcoming “MonsterVerse” films as well. Recently we’ve received the word that we’ll be getting more details on the story surrounding the action that takes place in the film, courtesy of an upcoming comic book miniseries. ‘Skull Island: The Birth of Kong’ will be a four-issue series from Legendary Comics heading to comic shops soon, and it will provide details on some events that happened immediately before and after what was shown on screen in ‘Kong: Skull Island.’ Written by Arvid Nelson and featuring artwork from Zid, the story promises to tell, among other tidbits, why Kong is the last of his kind.
