Fans of The CW’s DC super hero shows may recall that when Barry Allen/The Flash (Grant Gustin) visited Supergirl‘s parallel universe, he was astounded to discover that aliens (including Supergirl, herself– played by Melissa Benoist) dwelled on Earth, since in the existing “Flarrowverse” extraterrestrials don’t yet exist. That’s about to change in a BIG way.
Since ‘The Flash’ spun out of ‘Arrow’, it’s become a tradition to combine the heroes periodically to reaffirm their shared universe, which ultimately lead to ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ which stars heroes and villains from both shows. Now, with all three shows launching their new seasons at the same time, things are only going to get bigger in more ways than one. This year’s crossover will take place over three nights, starting with ‘The Flash’, then ‘Arrow’ and ‘Legends’. (Supergirl the character will play a part, but ‘Supergirl’ the show won’t be part of the event.)
But it looks as though the alien invasion on ‘Supergirl’ will spill over to the mainstream “Flarrowverse” as the toothy Dominators will menace the heroes.
Executive producer Marc Guggenheim stated:
“We’re using cutting-edge prosthetics and computer effects to achieve a feature film-quality look, which is faithful to Invasion! artist Todd McFarlane’s interpretation of the characters.”
You can see McFarlane’s take above.
In the ‘Invasion!’ miniseries, the Dominators created a pact with other alien races to eliminate the super heroes of Earth, who they view as a threat. Among the other races were the Daxamites, who possess powers similar to Kryptonians and one of them, Mon-El, will show up on ‘Supergirl’ this season, played by Chris Wood. It’s unknown right now if he will play a role in this plotline.
The most lasting impact of the ‘Invasion!’ comic book was coining the term “metahuman” in reference to humans who developed super powers. In the beginning, it was clearly established that the term only referenced super HUMANS (like The Flash), meaning that aliens like Superman and the Martian Manhunter and those that gained their powers from weaponry, like the Green Lanterns, weren’t included. But over the years, “metahuman” has come to encompass all of DC’s super beings.
Then again, they already use the word “metahuman” on ‘The Flash’ and the other shows.
We know that ‘The Flash’ will be grappling with the ‘Flashpoint’ effect following Barry’s abuse of his powers to prevent his mother from being killed, but that that storyline will be over by the time the crossover event occurs. There are rumors that this event will result in ‘Supergirl”s reality being shifted over to the mainstream “Flarrowverse” and even that Katie Cassidy‘s Laurel Lance/Black Canary will be brought back to life!
Are you intrigued with the introduction of aliens to The CW’s super shows? What else would you like to see develop on these shows?
